I have a Winchester Mod 71 and want to slug the barrel to get a mould cut for it..is the barrel slugged clear from the muzzle or is it slugged from and just at the breach? I have never attempted to do this before so any advice would be awesome. Thanks

Thanks, I looked around and couldn't find anything and the video you link to has nothing to do with how to slug a barrel..I will keep looking. There are tons of comments on everything and finding one item is a bit over whelming.

You're initial post is a bit confusing. Are you trying to evaluate your bore diameter, or evaluate the chamber/throat/lead?

Use a glove. :kidding:

To slug a bore for bore and groove diameters, slug from the muzzle. Use an oversized pure lead slug (fishing egg sinker will also work). Lube the bore. Start it with a brass punch. Use a steel rod to drive it through and out the breech. For the upper chamber, neck and throat area use cerrosafe and follow directions.

Taking the action out of a 71 is a pain and just as bad or worse putting it back together.

I am trying to find out the proper size to have a mould made for my rifle. What I have read is that the best way to do that is to slug the barrel..I was initially told to slug it from the breach but with is being a lever action this doesn't seem to work too well for me. I am just looking for some information to get the best mould for my rifle. I have heard it can vary by as much as .002 or more...

Oh, and don't to use a wood rod. You can wrap some tape around a steel rod near the end to keep the edges of the end from contacting the bore.

Have you read this specific sticky yet from Goodsteel? It's how I have done my rifles so far. I sacrifice a casing, pour it mostly full of lead then cast a few rounds from pure lead for the slug.

You want a "Chamber Cast" for a more accurate mold design. This will give you the information you need about what style of Boolit and how far out you will need to seat the boolit. Goodsteel's write up sticky on "This is how I do a pound cast" is perfect for what you need to do.

if you only do a bore slug, that will only tell you what diameter your boolit needs to be sized to.

117519I have found a good way to slug a bore is with candle wax, it enables you to get a bore slug and chamber cast at the same time.

Just be careful not to overfill the chamber, as you will curse while trying to remove the excess wax!

Make sure the bore is clean and free from lube, push a paper plug down the bore to the required depth and tamp from both sides to form a wax tight seal.

Allow the wax to cool, then tap out from the muzzle end. GENTLY, measure the slug, remember it is soft.

A chamber impact impression will reveal the dimensions needed to design a bullet to exactly fit your chamber.

The Precision Cast Bullet Design ~ Ultimate software (http://www.tmtpages.com/#ultimate)contains help files that document a procedure to make a chamber impact impression.

The TMT Enterprise (http://www.tmtpages.com/)website has a duplicate on-line help file (http://www.tmtpages.com/draw/UltimateHelp/DesignUltimateHelp.htm) that illustrates the impact impression porcedure

You need a chamber impression, and as a couple members have said, I have written a Sticky on the subject.
It is imperative that the stuff you use for the impression does not change size, and is strong enough to measure with a micrometer. No ifs ands or buts. Pure lead is the best for this.
I have also written a sticky titled "just a few tips for new rifle casters" which I recommend you read as well.
What you are after is a real idea of what the inside of your barrel looks like from the chamber forward. Duplicate what you measure exactly in a mold design, and you will have a good mold for your rifle.
