View Full Version : Fun evening in the ER, dropped a knife on my hand

I had just sharpened my chefs knife, picked it up to move it and the hand I had surgery on had a spasm and I dropped it blade down. Landed on my left hand, hit the second finger just past the bottom knuckle. I could look in the hole and see my knuckle bones move so off to the ER I went. 25 mile drive and a 2 hour wait later doc stitched the tendon back together, then 2 more in the lining over the tendon, then 3 to close up the skin. Tendon was almost severed, it still being attached saved me a trip tomorrow to the hand specialist. Hand looks like a mummy, 4 weeks in a brace to let the tendon heal so I will miss part of fall hunting season. Car accident is still haunting me with hand problems on the right side to go with the left being numb most of the time.

Good grief Mary. Right side had problems so you had to hurt the left side to even them up? I'm starting to think you're campaigning for the position of poster girl for the phrase, "glutton for punishment". For cryin' out loud Mary, be careful.

Mary how does that old saw go.."If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all". Sure sorry to hear of this latest. You be careful until you are all healed up. I said a prayer for your healing.

I feel for ya. I pulled beaut of a move once, had to have the end of my left thumb and forefinger sewn back on. Can only blame myself for that one. Take good care of it, injuries to the fingers really suck.

Gail says she has a great deal of sympathy for you! (as do I). Gail has been in a splint (left thumb) for the better part of 6 weeks now. Yesterday doc said off to an Orthopedic spec., Doc thinks it may be TFCC (whatever that is).

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. If it's any consolation, it sounds like you did a really good job of sharpening that knife. Good luck with the healing process.

Mary,

Good luck!

I learned a long time ago to not try catching a knife when you drop it.

Well, that's a shame, but look at the bright side. Much better than a chain saw or
an axe.

Thanks and I type fast one handed lol I was pulling my left hand back and it just caught me. I caught it right handed just after. Fast reflexes but not fast enough last night. Picture of the damages... lots of swelling, been icing a lot today.

Mary, I feel your pain. I hope your recovery is much quicker than mine. When my right arm got busted up (hence my screen name), the spasms down my right arm always happened at inopportune times. The ER at one point started to accuse my wife of being abusive. That lasted all of 5 minutes though, cause I tore them one hell of a new one!

Dang, that hurts just looking at it.

And I'm the guy who took part of my trigger finger off in a punch press, and had two fingers on my left sewn back on after being pulled off, not cut off.

Knew it was deep when I saw white right before I bled all over the counter. Grabbed paper towels and duct tape, wrapped it, then drove myself to the ER, luckily I have good pain meds for my spine issues to keep it down to just annoying

Cut half my index finger off at age 3; I was a curious child. Old Doc Morton stitched it back on. I remember it pretty clearly.

You're very fortunate to have such good reflexes. Also, not a lot of nerve endings in that particular spot.

Hay waiter, there's a finger in my soup.

At least you caught a good surgeon on duty, bummer when they have to go back in later. I used to see an orthopod more than a GP, I know good work when I see it. Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.
Funny thing, I just finished a kit boning knife tonight. That thing is so sharp it's almost scary.

I use that knife pretty much daily, part of my hand most of the time but as my neck gets worse combined with carpal tunnel surgery twice on that wrist I keep getting bouts of numbness. Tonight the outside 2 fingers are totally numb and not working well. See the neurosurgeon tomorrow, it has been almost 11 months since the accident and I am tired of the neck pain and lack of sleep it is causing. Pushing to get the fusion done so I can heal.

Mary, PM me an address. I have a little device that is really hard to find. I use it for the permanent numbness in my fingers. I buy them by the dozen when I find them, and pass them on to others afflicted with that finger numbness like I am. It has the same effect as when the PT person has you 'play' in the dried rice, without having to keep a pail of rice at hand.

You're a tough one. You don't know any other way to be. Heal up fast, and start thinking like a carpenter. "Measure twice and cut once."

At least you know the tip of your knife is sharp. :kidding:  I wish you best with your recovery.

Have you looked into an artificial joint for your neck instead of a fusion? My dad had a fusion done, but now the next joint is damaged due to the loss of movement where the fusion is. My chiropractor told me that a fusion will cause problems down the road on either side of it. We have heard from a few people who were a candidate for the artificial joint and they seem to be recovering quickly and doing better than those with fusions. My dad's injury is a workman's comp case and they are not good about making sure the patient sees the doctor in a timely manner or finding the best possible doctor. They seem to do as little as possible. I have advised him to see another doctor on his own, who is knowledgeable with the artificial joints. If they think he is a candidate, then he will have to fight workman's comp, but at least he will know it is worth pushing the subject. Right now he is facing a second fusion, which will limit him even more.

Medicare isn't covering the artificial discs or the stem cell injections yet. Neuro wants me to see his boss, he was talking wait another year... I just about strangled him on the spot but I kept it down to muttering under my breath. So 1 more appointment to make a decision. I am not putting up with this pain for another year.

Replied back Mary, and for anyone else, this is the ring I was talking about. It was easier to just make a youtube video showing it.
