Hi guys I am just trying to get feedback on anyone who has experience of Chiappa lever rifles. A 44 mag, 24" octagonal barrel one has caught my eye.

Marlin don't make them with that barrel nor do Winchester!

You won't enjoy that crescent buttplate. .44 mag do kick believe it or not.

It cant be any worse than my 30-30 with cresent buttplate can it? I think with the cresent you have to be much more mindful of how you shoulder the rifle!

It looks nice, but has anyone personal experience of quality?

It most certainly kicks more than the 30-30!

I have to take your word for it, I would have thought they would be similar, bigger slug but a fair bit slower! I don't notice it to bad with my 375W but it has a nice flat plate!

Chiappa quality?

The early Chiappa a dealer bought for himself to compete with was a mess internally, and needed a lot of work. It has been a few years, and I believe I heard their quality improved. That is the only one I have dealt with.

I know their prices are up there a bit.
they are win 92's plain and simple, so are the rossi's.

those crescent plates aren't that bad, I have them on several lever guns including my 1886 browning in 45/70.
they aren't designed to be shot from a bench, standing up and using a proper hold you'll never notice it too much.
you can get a wrap around leather butt plate made for them too which helps fill in that gap and smooth things over a bit.

ohh if you like the barrel rossi does make them with the 24" octagon [they are called a rifle] the 20" octagon are called short rifles [and many times come with a shotgun type butt stock] and the shorter round barrels are called carbines, they are a whole lot lighter and easier to carry around all day.
I have seen guy's cut that crescent off the wood and straighten the steel plate and reshape it slightly to make the end flatter too.

I probably don't know what I am talking about but check it carefully.

My BIL bought one of their 1911's and it turned out it was a 1911 on the outside only.
Inside it was completely redesigned. It was a very unhappy experience. He finally took it back, bit the bullet, and traded it for a "real" 1911.

You can also buy a replacement buttstock. I have one coming for my Rossi 92 clone. I can't stand the curved buttplate. Dunno if is my body shape or hold, but I cannot remember even 1 that was pleasant to shoot. Pilgrim

What he said. Stout 44 loads will kick more than any 30-30 you can load. Promise. Plinking 44 loads or 44 special is a different story.

Gotta add another vote for "more than a .30-30" recoil. I was quite surprised at how much my
.44 mag Win 94 recoiled the first time I tried it.

They had a long period of lousy quality. Some people say they have improved but you could never prove that to me with the later model 76 I bought. probably the worst quality gun I ever owned. I fixed some of it and then got rid of it being completely honest with the buyer. haven't looked at their stuff since.

The tale seems much like the new Marlins and Rossi its a lottery! The Japchesters are well made, I would even be willing to cough up the coin, if it weren't for the dam tang safety!

Its a Winchester 1892, thats where you are suppose to have a grub screw with a nice hole drilled and tapped for a tang sight, how can I put my tang sight there?

The Chiappa looks more faithfully to the orignal 1892 at least visually than the new Japchesters!

I had a 35Rem with a crescent buttplate and it was not something I'd shoot much in a tshirt.
