I have a Guide gun model 1895 that I have been shooting 390 hp or 420 gr flat nose out of. I am looking for a bullet that doesn't beat you up as much. I only hunt whitetail deer but hope to go after hogs someday. I like a gas check in a rifle and would like some input on the above mentioned bullet. 300 grains is plenty for deer and hogs, I am concerned with recoil and accuracy. My go to powder is 3031. Anyone casting this? Can anyone tell me what diam. it casts at using lyman#2 equivalent. Thanks, Stu

Just measured one cast from WW + 2% and it mic's right at 0.459. Meplat diameter is approx 0.290

I am shooting that bullet cast from wheelweights in a Ruger #1. 50.0 grains of IMR 3031 works great and recoil is not bad. Three shots will always group 1-1 1/4". I run them through a .459" sizer to lube them, as the above post states they roll out right at .459.

I understand about recoil concern. I found out a long time ago that a Ruger or Marlin can stand more than I can!

I had a Ruger #1 in .458 Lott, a 500 grain bullet at 2200 fps. was NOT fun.

I just finished some loads with that boolit & 3031, about 46gr I believe.

Have not shot them yet and didn't mic them either but I am expecting good results as I've had someone else tell me it was a good load out of a 1895 Marlin.

My bullets dropped .457" from that mold and were not so accurate for me, while the Gould HP was very accurate and .459"

Thanks for the load...I'll have to try it in my #1.

Personally, I don't like to go that short on 45-70 bullets. Instead, I use 350 LFN bullets and find that recoil is much less than with 400 grain bullets. Still, if the RCBS 45-300 is accurate in your gun, it will be more than enough bullet for wild hogs.
