My buddy bought a new 45/70 yesterday and thought I would pass on my thoughts. First the wood its self was nice but the checkering was not as sharp or nice as could have been. Second the bolt could have been fit better to the receiver just more hanging out than should have been. The biggest offence as far as looks was the bluing we looked at five rifles and the bluing just was not done well on any of them.

The good points.
The action was nice and smooth the third rifle was the slickest and thats the one that went home with him. Second the bore looked good and slugged .458 and showed no restrictions which really surprised me. They took the serial number off the tang so no problems with a tang sight. And it was priced good @ $600 and the store throws in a cheap but usable sling. So any way I think Remington is getting the bugs worked out and are listening to customer feed back. We are supposed to shoot this evening or this week when we do I'll report on accuracy. FB

Thanks for the feedback. I've been wanting to add another 45/70 to the arsenal. I may have to go back and look over the rifle length 1895 I saw last time.

I agree also, having bought my 1895 on Gun Broker over a year ago - I didn't want a Remlin. But I have heard that they are getting their act together on the post-acquisition Marlins. Glad to hear it.

While I would prefer a JM Marlin,
i wouldn't thumb my nose at a nice Remlin if it checked out.

Like most of us I am not crazy about the change either but at least somebody is still making them especially in the U.S.A. Also glad they are addressing the problems if they get their act together on the bluing that will help considerably. We did not get to the range as planned but hopefully by Sunday I will be able to tell you guys how it shoots. FB

I have put about 200 rounds through my 45-70 so far, not a problem or a failure to eject or any problems at all.
The finish is beautiful and the checkering is really nice, I would buy another tomorrow if I had the extra $$$.
I just love my 1886 Winchester [smilie=w:

Bought by Remlin 1895 for $430 NIB. It works fine. I too have had plenty of JM Marlins. I think we remember them better than the were. Sort of like my 1 mile times: the older I get, the faster I was!

I have high hopes for the Remlins but there are still plenty of nice used JM guns out there. The Remlins I see are looking better, hope they continue to improve.

The Remlin 1895's I have seen in person are pretty good. Certainly better than the 336's and 1894's.

I bought a Remlin 30-30 not long ago and it is as accurate as the 1892 I had long ago. I get under 1" at 100 with cast.
One gun I wish they would bring back is the 39 Mounty. Straight stock, lighter, shorter gun then the 39A but the most accurate .22 I ever had. Best squirrel gun ever.

My teeth chatter for a SS guide gun in 45-70 but over $800 is out of the question.

I have owned a number of Marlins and have been a fan for a couple of decades, but the current rifles have left a bad taste in my mouth. I truly hope they get their proverbial sh*t together. The last two lever guns i have purchased in the last year were both Henrys and i do not see myself looking back. These are American made and they are beautiful. Henry is mighty proud of them however, but everything is overprice nowadays it seems.

Keep the pressure on Remington. They are a larger better financed company with more engineering resources.
They have no excuses that would keep them from making a better rifle than the best made by Marlin.
They should be able to use conventional barrel blanks and get rid of the Micro groove silliness. Remington has made millions of accurate bolt guns without Microgroove.

I wonder how many different 45-70s Marlin had made? Is the GG a ported short barrel carbine? I have a 1895ss with a 22 inch barrel. Micro grove, half mag and hammer saftey. Did they all have same twist rate?

I have not had any trouble with the micro grove but size a little bigger.

I have a remlin guide gun in 45-70 shoots great cleaned some of burs off action and put a wild west trigger in it wood fit could be a little better but this gun is my work horse bear/ deer hunter. The newer ones seam to be even made better as far as fit.

44man-

I really do like my SS Guide gun. .45 -70 will do a fine job on a blue wildebeest, one shot
at about 80-90 yds and he went 25 yds and that was it. The gun will put three shots into
1.5-2" if I do my part, using a load of 748 to drive at 1750 fps with a 405 cast or jbullet.

It is good to hear that Remington is sorting out the production issues. These are really
useful rifles and it would be a shame to not be able to buy a new one.

I bought my remlin 45-70 2 yrs ago this coming dec....So far i've had the ejector and extractor worked on and had to have the action smoothed out. The ejector was gouging my case heads...bad enough of a burr they'd cut you when you picked them up. But the dang gun shoots very accurate...just not impressed with the QC on it

I have recently picked up a Rem made 1895 SBL & 336BL and have been happy with them so far. Quality and function seems good and there are no glaring wood to metal gaps.

In the pic below I have mounted the lightweight Leupold scout scope on the SBL and will need to get skinner sights for the 336, this pic was taken on its maiden voyage.
