I have no idea why but I have an 8-pound can of this stuff that has been sitting on the shelf for maybe a decade. I'd like to find some cast bullet load to use it in. What's this stuff good for?

There has to be a condom shooter in your area that will be glad to have it. If not, look around for a full case (90 percent or more) caliber that will provide a MAXIMUM of 2400 fps with the boolit (diameter/length) of choice. ... felix

I use H4831 in 30-06 with the 311284 from 40 to 50gr. The higher loads need a hard bullet and the lower one tend to go unstable beyond 300yds. Works well otherwise. I bought 50lbs of the stuff WWII surplus and it is still good.

Do you have a Garand or M1A? BruceB posted a great thread on using case bullets with them and liked 4831.

IMR 4831 is really for jacketed bullets in large cases ranging from 300 Win Mag to 470 NE. Works wonderfully for that service, but I've not had good luck with it using cast bullets.

4831 is a terriffic powder for jacketed and cast. I've shot thousands and thousands of rounds of cast bullets in 30/06 using 4831. My favorite was 42 grs of 4831 beneath 170 gr cast bullet. I probably could have increased the load a few grains but this was so accurate that I never bothered.

Anyone with some 4831 they don't want...contact me.:-D

A full case (38 grains) in a 30 30 yields great accuracy in my rifles. Around 1950 fps with a 150 grain bullet (31200 cup per Lee"s Modern Reloading) . Not tops in velocity but plenty usable. 4350 does good also in this application. There is some unburned powder in my barrels but not enough to be a problem.

I have used it in 6 mm Rem with 80 gr Jacketed bullets 46.5 grains gives around 1.25+ inch groups at 100yds. Thats as good as I'll ever get with this tired barrel. Like a previous poster, I also acquired a supply years ago on the cheap that I still shoot occasionally.

My 7.5 mas likes it with 180-195 gr boolits. In the 49/56 with full power loads it will eject the brass as far as the milsurp rounds. I also use it in 30.06 and 308 Win. Mark

I have heard it said many times that slow IMR powders like 4350 and 4831
will damage the oprod on Garands and M1As and that they should use 4895 or
4064, and no slower powders.

Ken Waters used it as a case filling (mostly) load in the .45-70, claiming it burned at lower pressure in such cases. I tried it in my Garrett Sharps carbine with the Ideal 457124 and found it was all he said it was. Couldn't double charge the case, very mild pressures and very accurate, as long as you blew the unburned kernels out of the bore after every shot.
