Hi my boolit buddies....

In the next few weeks, I will have very limited internet... I am taking my son to a new small homestead about a thousand miles south of where I live in Cordova, Alaska... We will be developing a couple of cabins over the winter from scratch. We are taking a bunch of chainsaws and some chainsaw mills and making it happen... I really wanna do this with my youngest son, while I am still healthy enough to make it happen... We will be living pretty much completely subsistence for the winter... Will be taking the travel trailer with us... Going by ferry from Cordova, to Valdez by ferry, then driving about 700 miles through central Alaska across the Canadian border, re crossing the border back into the USA near Haines, then catching another ferry from Haines to ketchikan, then hopping another ferry to Prince of wales Island, and driving about 50 miles past Craig Alaska to the final destination.... We wont have power for quite a while except for a wind generator and a small gas generator. We will rig up a water cache meant system to get the daily rainwater so we can bathe and such... Internet will be more of a weekly visit when we go to the nearest town for church... But that will be about it...

Soooo I will be around and checking in, and I don't leave till next month, second or 3rd week, but I thought I would let everybody know.. I aint checking out, just will have very limited internet...

here is a link to where I am going in Naukati Bay.. You can switch to satelite image map if you know how to work with google maps...

wish me luck guys... And prayers..

Geez, why don't you wait for the really nice weather to show up? Good luck to you. Sounds like a lot of fun. Hope you get a pretty decent cabin up before winter sets in. Is the cold preferable to the mosquitos?

Wow!!!

Sounds like a grand adventure and an opportunity for a real bonding experience with your son.

I wish I could have had the option to embark on such an adventure in my younger days. Much too old and physically damaged at this late date for anything quite that physically challenging.

I envy you.

The area I am going to will be a vacation in the winter compared to cordova.. It is much much warmer there, with temps in the 30's in the winter... Nothing like the sheer volume of snow we get here... It is a rain forest though, and will be very very wet. But I have raingear... lol

I am sending all of my guns down on a boat... So I will NOT be taking Any firearms accross the border. I will be carrying my Hoyt Carbon Matrix bow though....

Maybe you should contact the history channel and let them film you in this adventure. They might even pay you for doing it. Of course you would have to add some drama here ad there.
Anyway, I wish you all the luck and good health in this venture.

Get lots of blue tarps and bungee cord.

Tar paper used to be called "Ketchikan Roll Siding". Now tyvek house wrap takes the honors.

Great adventure!

Why did you decide to drive through AK and Canada instead of taking the ferry all the way to Prince of Wales Island? Just curious....

Not to speak for AkGuy but the pricing for taking a towed vehicle behind you on an Ak Marine Highways ferry is absolutely insane and he is towing his travel trailer.

What an experience for your son! This is something I bet, that will always stay with him, and how much he will learn by doing all of this will just be an incredible experience for the both of you. We will most definitely keep you in our thoughts and prayers for safe journey and blessings on your project, that the Lord will have his hand upon all of it. Enjoy yourself, but don't be a stranger!

Trip of a lifetime and something I miss. I had a great aunt who lived in AK when I was a teen. Spent an entire summer there when I was 13 at her fly in fish camp. She is gone and the fish camp went back to the government. I always wanted to live up there full time and live off the land.

Thanks guys.... I have a TON of tarps, boxes of bunngies, and pleanty of rain gear... Cordova where I live now is on the top end of the rain forest, but it gets colder here in cordova so the rain is converted to wet slushy snow by the foot in the winter time.....

I will NOT miss the kind of snow we get in Cordova one BIT....lol

Hey, matey, no offense. Welcome to the banana belt of AK. I like rain, you don't have to shovel it.

leeggen
08-27-2014, 11:43 PM
Hey AG did your wife in the one pic just throw the shovel out of the hole? looks like the shovel handle in the upper left corner. Can't say I would blame her if she did, THAT is alot of snow.
Good luck.
