Before I melt my CC trying to buy all Ideal catalogs, what edition did the 285448 / 287448 first show up? What of the 285129 / 287129?

Something su-weet would be if one of the old dragons fitfully slumbering on a hoard of Ideal catalogs to assemble a list of when specific boolits showed up. If I had the catalogs myself, I'd czech for any hints or suitability that the boolit was designed for.

To those (well meaning) weaklings quivering in the corner, when will we actually disseminate the historical reasons for these boolits?

Is there someone assembling this review of catalogs already?

Any pre-50s 284-289 bullet was most likely for 7x57. After 53 all bets are off and after 63 there were more choices. The 7x57 had a 50 yr head start on almost every other commercial 7mm that comes to mind.

Check the Lyman cast bullet manual #3, Has a list for mold #'s & editions they appeared in I believe.

Perhaps this is the source of books that the OP is looking for in his quest for specific issue dates. Yep, it will take $ and time.

I've bought a few things from Abby. But at almost $16 a pop, it's for the noveau riche, not me!

If you have to ask, you can't afford it...

Ideal No.285448, designed by H. Guy Loverin, first appeared in Ideal Handbook No.34 (1940) - "It is very accurate in the 7 m/m." Its last appearance was in Lyman Handbook No.45 (1970).

Ideal No.287129, designer not known, was first mentioned in a supplement to Lyman Handbook No.41 (1957), and its first (and last) actual appearance was in Lyman Handbook No.42 (1960).

As one of those "old dragons", I have been gathering as many of the Handbooks as I can find for a number of years, in an attempt to come up with just such a list as you refer to. I currently am in possession of 33 of the 49 total handbooks (mostly missing in the 1900s and 1910s), and have information on in excess of 600 mould numbers. It is somewhat disorganized in its present state, but if anyone has questions about a particular number I will be more than happy to share what information I have.
