Went up today to go shoot my new (to me) Marlin 336A from 1948 that i picked up in Idaho and shipped down to california, sorta a last hoorah as tomorrow is my last day here before i move out to Flagstaff Arizona.

Anyways i picked the gun up saturday evening and spent that night cleaning it, it took me 6 hours to completely clean the thing, there was 66 years of oily rust, grease and gunk built up in every nook and cranny, surprisingly it cleaned up just fine, with some bluing loss under the forend where the wood contaced the barrell (natually after that many decades i wasnt surprised to see the surface rust there that had been stopped years ago by oil)

I was definitely the first person to take this firearm apart, since it was assembled aside from maybe the lever off to clean the barrel, the mainsprings plate showed no mark in the bluing of ever having been removed, and the screws were/are immaculate, I did have one screw on the forend cap, prety much just fall apart on me, it was ground shallow from the factory as evident by comparing it to its twin on the otherside of the cap, and the years of crud had pretty much cemented it in there, i managed to get it out without damaging the gun or its finish, but the screw is pretty ugly looking, and put it back in after cleaning but i will need a new one of those.

Anyways after a completely thorough cleaning and noticing that the bore looked amazing for its age i headed up to the range this morning, and aside from my flinch ive been working on it showed great promise.

Only problem is it shoots 4.5" high at 25 yards, about 6" high at 50 and 10" or more at a 100! :34: So it looks to me like someone threw the peep sight on there but never changed the front sight, so i will need to get a higher one, judging from my elevation error about a .42-.44" high front sight or .13" higher than the current one.

it really liked the heavier 170gr bullets out of the winchester power points.

Last goodbye at my range

150 gr federals at 25 yards, just about an inch, this is on a rest with open sights at the 6'oclock position.

the winchester powerpoints did considerably better at 25 yards. I was also loading this single shot so i had to re-adjust sight picture each time.

Not the best i think my flinch contributed here plus the fact i had to compensate by aiming 6-8" low so i couldnt get an accurate grouping.

Yet my offhand should similar results surprisingly!

I actually think this is pretty good for offhand just about 1.5"

anyways long story short this rifle shows potential and im really liking those first groups, if i can just get the sight heigh figured out and work on my flinch i should have a good shooting rifle.

thanks for looking,

Good find.
And it looks to be a shooter.
Although no mention of caliber I assume it is a 30-30 Winchester.

Yep,Every time I put a peep on I had to replace the front bead to get the point of impact back down.I like a 1/16" white bead.Doesn't cover too much of the target even at 100 yds.

I have that same year rifle,,i think its a twin sister to yours! Mine has a .310 bore, and a huge throat. It never shot cast very well, until i figured it out.Be intresting to know if yours had a oversize bore as well....

Very nice rifle. The waffle tops were only made for 4 years and everyone I have shot or own has been exceptional in accuracy. Good luck and good hunting.

I just got the same rifle Sunday at the GSO fun show. An 'E' prefix made in 1948, first year of production for the 336. Mine has some browning on the receiver finish, but that just adds character. The bore is perfect, like new, and had nary a trace of copper fouling. Traded a Norinco SKS that I wasn't shooting at all for it, and I am very happy with the deal. Also has the same short magazine tube and no holes drilled for a scope. This one has barrel mounted Marbles sights that look factory, but probably have been changed. Haven't had a chance to put it on paper yet, but have been building cast loads with 2400 and R7. With this pristine bore, I am expecting good results and big fun!....DanM
