I picked up some stuff from an acquaintance. This was in with some other automotive things. Anyone know what it is for? Or what it might be worth?

Pretty much obsolete from a company that I think no longer exists, but it was to test armatures if I am not mistaken.

I think it's called a comutator (sp) checker, like for starter motor field windings..

We have a winner!

The thin piece of metal (or a piece of hacksaw blade) would "growl" when a bad armature winding was detected.

Try putting it on Ebay with a no reserve auction. You might get lucky and find someone who wants to buy it.

No, hardly anyone sells parts for starters these days. Most mechanics today have nver rebuilt an starter, alternator or carburetor and have no idea what a dwellmeter is used for.

A starter rebuild shop would use the tool. Many years back I worked in motor shop an we tested DC motor armatures with the tool.

They are still in use, just not by automotive shops. There are still many starter,gen,alt rebuild shops. At todays prices it just doesn't pay to rebuild the common ones, but there are plenty of less common or older ones rebuilt by these shops everyday.
