Hi,
Although the passing of Robin Williams has taken most of the news, (my wife cried over that one) we have also lost Lauren Bacall! Being a child of the 60's have always had an interest in the 40-50's Stars. The one thing about all the older ladies in Hollywood was how drop dead gorgeous they were when young! Lucy Ball,Sophia Loren,Audrey Hepburn, Mauren O'Hara, most started as dancers or fashion models.

Ms Bacall of course taught "Bogey" how to whistle, she did it so good, he married her at twice her age! One of the last times I saw her in a film was John Wayne's last picture 'The Shootist" I thought it was right that she play with Wayne in his last picture. Wayne was said to need a tough gutsy woman in his movies that would look him in the eye and go toe to toe with him and I'm sure Ms Bacall filled the bill! I just thought I would let people know the last of the "Great Dames" has gone!

Although Miss Bacall, "The Face" was certainly one of the most stunningly attractive women in the motion picture industry, don't forget to put Rita Hayworth on your list.

Although Miss Bacall had horribly misguided political views, I admired her acting, not to mention her looks.

My two favorite pictures she starred/costarred in, "The Shootist", even with opposing political views, would love to have seen she and the Duke do a couple of more pictures together; they had great chemistry. And, "Sex and the Single Girl"; Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Henry Fonda and Lauren Bacall. I have both these movies on DVD and have watched both a half dozen times in as many years.

Also enjoyed her as Schatze Page in, "How to Marry a Millionaire". She was 29 years old and of course, WOW.

Who's next? You know they always come in 3s.

Goodby Miss Bacall. You were a class act.

Indeed, a loss, but a long and productive life. She leaves us with many performances and memories. Even songs mention "just like Bogie and Bacall" because it is simply a part of American lexicon. And yes, her performance in the Shootist is to particularly commended.

Hi,
Thanks Smokey! I knew I was leaving a good half dozen out! Rita Hayworth would without a doubt be at the top of the list! As you mentioned "class" was what the girls in Hollywood seem to be lacking these days,(shoplifting, crotch grabbing, and profanity?)

I'm afraid weve turned a corner and will never be able to go back! I have a collection of old movies to and never tire of watching them. A lot on VHS no less!

Hi,
I thought Maureen O'Hara had died? Glad I was wrong! Her husband ran a seaplane business out of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands and my wifes father managed a Casino in San Juan. My wife saw John Wayne in San Juan as a small girl as Wayne would come through Puerto Rico on his way to St.Croix to visit Ms. O'Hara and her husband!

Yes! Most men didn't know it but Cloris Leachman was built like the "brickhouse"! Most only remember her as "Frau Grudder" in "Young Frankenstien"!

OK, how's about Mitzie Gaynor and Cherice can't remember her first name. And Carolyn Jones. But having said that Bogie's Baby I think started her career at 19. Then again I could be wrong. Some very beautiful and smart actresses and unfortunately we'll never see their like again. Forgot Kim Novak. Frank

Hi,
Jennifer Jones,is one of my favorites! First saw her with Gregory Peck in "Duel in the Sun" and then in "Beat the Devil" with Bogart. That film also starred little Gina Lolabridgida in her first american film! Directed by Houston and the Screenplay was written by Houston and Truman Capote! Jennifer was married to David Selznick the producer and Studio Head! Found the movie at GW for a dollar on VHS almost like new!

I must admit to having a big crush on Lauren Bacall my whole life. I still find Key Largo to be Bogie's best movie, though he made some good ones.

Her role in the shootist was great. Years before she had starred opposite the Duke in a movie called Blood Alley (also a good one) and apparently despite severe ideological and political differences that ran very deep, the two hit it off and were lifelong good friends who respected each other greatly. I'd heard John Wayne asked for her to play that role in The Shootist because of that. I always kind of wondered why Maureen O'Hara did do that part, she was his leading lady in so many of his movies.

One who holds a special place for me, Natalia Nicolaevna Zacharenko; better know as Natalie Wood. I worked on Brainstorm and had the privilege of meeting and talking with Natalie, (that's what she told me to call her). She was one of the most beautiful, pleasant and down to earth celebrities you could ever meet. She looked like a beauty queen and acted as though she was your sister and you were her favorite brother.
The man who introduced us was a MGM Police Officer of 40+ years and had held her on his knee between scenes and escorted her all over the studio lot when she was a child.

113479113480 You think she looked beautiful on camera? She was nothing short of breathtaking in person.

Hi,
Nice story Smokey, thanks for sharing! My introduction to Natalie Wood was in the film "The Searchers" with John Wayne. This was of course a story of a young girl abducted by the Cheyenne Indians. I'm sure we have all seen it as it is a classic and one of Ford's best films.

As a kid watching it on TV (2 channels) I can still remember the goose bumps when Wayne finally found her as a young woman which of course was played by Natalie!

A still of Wayne in that movie showing him with about a week worth of whiskers and looking rough, which I will put below, is one of my favorites!

In 34 years in the studios with no shortage of exceptional lookers the hands down most stunning, most breath taking gorgeous is Jacqueline Smith. The camera did nothing for her, the make up department did little to nothing for her, when she showed up in the morning with no makeup she was at her best. To top it off she is also the most genuine, sweetest, nicest person you could meet. Just saw her in an interview a month or so ago and she is aging very well, still a remarkable looking lady.

Hi,
Yes! Ava was considered by many to being the most beautiful woman in the world! She was a Southern gal (SC) and had to get rid or work on her strong accent for Hollywood!

Burt Lancaster told a story in his older age of making his first movie (The Killers) with Ava when a young man, and being "embarrassed" on the set in a kissing scene!!!

Her best acting to me was in "Night of the Iguana" with Richard Burton!

Only saw Miss Smith once. I was on a plain clothes assignment on Rodeo Dr. and saw her go into Vidal Sasoon. Cartier Jewelers was kitty-corner across the street. Would have been a good time for someone to hold them up , as no one was looking in that direction.

One of the things that stunned me were the actresses who look spectacular on camera, but shockingly homely in person. In my opinion, Julia Roberts and Morgan Fairchild are prime examples of this paradox.

Julie Newmar perhaps?

Rachel was always 1 of my favorites. " A girls done before she ever gets started if all she's got is looks and a body." I always thought that she was probably better in business than the screen. I always was a sucker for the raven/auburn haired beauties.

Barbra Stanwick wasn't a hag either. Jane Russell too.

Funny how the country girls have that undefined something that draws so many effortlessly and they don't see it and the city girls feel like they have to be bigger than life to be noticed.
A Miss Ca taught me to milk goats on her families place near Ridgecrest Ca when I was maybe 6. Seems we've all seen stars at 1 time or another. I met Dale Evans once at the Museum out in Victorville also ,but again I was very young. I keep hoping that on 1 of my many trips to Carson City and Minden that I might make the acquaintance of Mary Ann , but I probably wouldn't recognize her anyway.

Oh well enough beauties at my finger tips to keep me from wish booking Hollywierd......

I agree up to a point. Too many starlets or whatever you call them today are little more than lip-synching exotic dancers. When they fade from the limelight, they go into rehab or whatever, go on Oprah, and get a reality show.

Both they and the ladies we are admiring in this thread are reflections of our society at different times. Those ladies were far sexier and sensual without acting like hookers.

On the other hand, many of those ladies had disastrous offscreen lives. Probably not as many nor as badly as in today's self- indulgent society, but it happened. The major difference then was they didn't flaunt it.

Now here's a lady both talented & classy in every respect, Marilyn McCoo:

First time I saw Julie Newmar was in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Next time was on the late '50s sitcom, "Love That Bob", aka "The Bob Cummings Show". Her most famous role was of course as "Catwoman"

According to IMDB, she has an I.Q. of 135, graduated high school at the age of 15 and has 3 patents to her name (for lingerie) is 5'11" and 135 (in her youth I'm assuming). She just turned 81 a couple of days ago.

First time I saw Julie Newmar was in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".

Pay attention to the credits and you'll see "Julie Newmeyer."

Also appearing pre-stage name was Ruta Kilmones, later known as "Ruta Lee". I don't know that Ruta did much on screen after that, but was very popular on stage here in Fort Worth's "Casa Mananna."

Kirstie Alley? Seriously? She's blown any feminine creds she ever had.

Glad to see they included Her Highness Grace Kelly.

One more grande dame has left us. Say goodbye to Anita Ekberg. 127049 Although she did not age well; became nothing short of frightening in her senior years. She was really something to see in her younger days.

If you don't recognize the photo, it's from "4 for Texas".
