Looks like a .32-20 that has been fired in a rather large chamber.

If you are talking about the Savage headstamp, I think they offered ammo up until and maybe slightly after WWII.

Looks like an original Savage .32-20 High Power that was fired in a straight walled chamber of a different caliber.Robert

Will a 32-20 fit in a .30 cal. carbine chamber?

Not sure but I do know that people use 32-20 brass to MAKE .30 carbine by running it through a .30 carbine sizer. THis is done for the .30 carbine chambered revolvers and is supposed to work quite well.

Thanks to all. I was referring to the Savage headstamp as I have never seen that on 32-20 ammo before. I do believe some folks here talk of running 32-20 brass in their 30 Carbine revolvers. Anyway, I just thought the Savage headstamp was pretty cool. JW

it's actually Hi. P. for high power.
savage made thier reputation by having rounds slightly faster than every body else.
thier 303 round was basically the 30-30, but they used a 311 diameter bullet in a 308 barrel to give it an extra boost.

the 32-20 brass can be used in a 30 carbine revolver but you need to trim it back a little so the length comes out right.
you also need to use 32-20 dies to reload the brass as it's thinner than 30 carbine brass sooo.

Huh? My lot's of 32-20 brass is actually a tad shorter, not longer. No need to trim and make it even shorter, in fact to avoid trimming brass that headspaces on the mouth is the reason I use the rimmed brass that is slightly shorter.

That's true. The 32-20 rimmed brass works quite well in the Ruger New Model Blackhawk but it is thinner and does blow out the shoulder. 32-20 dies have to be used to neck size or you can't hold a boolit. It's gotta be harder on the brass but I've not yet lost any to splitting or annealed any, some have probably 8-10 firings on them.

I think most of the ammo companies made .32-20 HP loadings. I had some Winchesters once with 110 grain FN soft point bullets so stamped. I believe it was a bid to make the .32-20 into a deer rifle.

Didn't shoot well in my M92 rifle as the barrel was pitted./beagle

The really old 32-20 brass is actually marked 32 WCF, "32 Winchester Center Fire, sometime just prior to WWII the 32-20 name began to appear, and the 32 WCF disappeared, same cartridge, but you have to be careful there are old commercial 32-20 ammo that was "rifle only" if you shoot it in older revolvers you can bulge the barrel, there are lots of old Smith revolvers where people have made that mistake.
