I was wondering how effective a .410 diameter cast 195gr. SWC at 1400-1800fps would be on whitetail deer? What sort of range could one expect? Thanks for any input.

Very effective given proper shot placement.
Pretty FAST, how are you getting that velocity??

Range ? Depends
What platform?
Shotgun with scope?
Rifle with scope?
Handgun with iron sights?
I would say what ever range you can keep the bullets into a 2 inch 5 shot group
Mike

p.s. many states do NOT allow deer hunting with a 410 shotgun

The vital kill zone on a whitetail deer is about 8 inches in the heart-lung area. That will give the hunter a clean kill well over the 2 inch zone you recommend. Heck, if the limitations being able to hunt deer were made based on a 2 inch 5 shot group, over 80% of the deer hunters would have to quit hunting.

I've taken deer, elk, antelope, feral hogs & Javelina with a 41 maggie using a 230 gr. Keith & it was always going a whole lot slower than 1800 fps! That 2 inch requirement at 50 yds is good advice, 2" off sand bags is a lot different than 2" offhand in the field.

Now, I feel sure you do not hunt from a benchrest, and also I also feel you do have a heart
that pumps adrenaline. And excitement is in the air, and deer are on the ground.

Now, I totally agree with you about the 8 inch heart lung area. What one must take into
effect is bullet placement under hunting conditions and I feel the 2 inch group under IDEAL conditions
if adequate to insure a humane kill under hunting conditions.

I will put my money on the guy that practices from hunting field positions and being able to put his shots into a 5 inch circle as the guy who will bring home the bacon as opposed to the guy who practices from the bench and shoots 2 inch groups. Skeetx, I am a old PPC completion shooter who is used to shooting 18 shots at 50 yards using strong and weak hand. I also was a LEO firearms instructor and IDPA shooter. My favorite gun to practice my 100 yard shooting was my duty 1911 45 ACP that has a gold colored bar below the top of the front sight that was on at 100 yards with my duty load. Saved my bacon one time at 100 yards when a felon made the mistake of pointing his rifle at me. Yes I am familiar with adrenaline and know how to control it.

That is plenty of weight unless you are hunting 300# deer-- A 170 grain hp will shoot from chest to skin on the back ribs from 55 yards- or if you prefer side to side through-- at 1200 to 1400--with good placement should do well-- are you using a TC or 6 gun?

Must be the Sierra 170 gr. slug, it has a very good reputation in the 41 maggie, but would it work at 56 yds....just kidding!

Velocity is kinda high at 1800fps. Hope it's a GC design. Use soft enough alloy to allow it to mushroom and not fracture. A common alloy used is 1/2 pure and 1/2 COWW with 1-2% added tin.

In the 41 mag I prefer 220+ gr to hunt with but in reality the 195 should do just fine.

I place my money on the gent who can place his shot where it needs to be regardless of how he shoots his gun

I too prefer the 210 -230 but with good shot placement --that would be true any boolit --it should work

That kind of velocity is a reality out of a carbine length barrel ! aka Marlin FG1894

it is also what i get with a 9" TC in .41 GNR :) and a 212 gr -1880 fps

The 41 is all I use for deer here in Iowa and I prefer the 220 to 250 range for my hunting purposes. The 195 SWC would work as long as shot placement is good. I would keep shots under 80yds

I shot a nice doe last year with 4 5/8 Blackhawk bullet was a 410459 that I hollow pointed weight was around 212 grains. I'm loading these over 9.2 grains of unique with win primers. Their running 1200 fps over the chrony. Doe was 45 yards broadside hit high through shoulders complete pass through both shoulder and broke spine.

I found the 195gr JSP or the Nosler 210gr JHP to be my go to bullets out of short barrel BH.
I tried the heavy bullets that Paco Kelly "talked" me into using and after picking up my cyclinder and looking for my base pin after third shots, I figured that the 180-210 grain bullet was good enough. And I left heavier bullets for the 43 mag :) and 45 LC.

The 41 Magnum or the 411-JDJ will anchor deer. Shot placement is crucial with *ANY* caliber. What range depends on which firearm you are using. The 195 cast will do the job if you do yours.

My avatar pic is proof the .41 mag is a bad idea for deer.......

The only reason I never bought a .41 was the lack of bullets/boolits long ago. Much better today and there is nothing a .44 can do that a .41 can't.
However at that high velocity I would sure look for some expansion. I wonder how 75% WW and 25% pure would do???

Thanks a lot guys, especially skeettx for the recommendation of a 2" group makes sense to me. Yes you did figure it out skeettx I was asking about the 410ga. I was just curious it seems that certain things can shut peoples minds down and they repeat what is "common knowledge" with out regard to the facts presented. The 410ga and deer are one of those things. Have those two words in a sentence and the immediate answer is something like unethical, use enough gun, or way to light. So I wanted to see what a group of knowledgeable hunters would think of the 410ga when it was presented in such a way to make them think it was another caliber (41 Mag). I would not trust the source for the velocities I listed they are from a person on shotgunworld using H110, we all know the type only has a few posts with like 75% being made within his own threads. Now I would trust turbo1889 who has gotten a 210 SWC at around 1500fps with 30grains of Reloader 7 to shoot well from a smoothbore 410ga. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?129419-Custom-410-Slug-Loads/page2 Seems that if one had a rifled barrel one could use a heavier bullet than 210gr and would increase accuracy. When one looks at what is possible with reloads and rifled barrels the 410ga is really not a light weight gun for deer and accuracy would be on par with any other 41 cal I would think.

If you look into what the buffalo hunters did with cartridges as light as 45-70s, I'd say the killing range of your 195 gr. .41 is limited only by your ability to hit the animal in the right place. Personally, I've killed two dozen or so white tailed does and a couple of mule deer does with a .357 magnum loaded with 158-160 grain lead semi-wadcutters. Never lost a deer and never recovered a bullet. Granted, these deer were under 30 yards, but I still never lost one and never recovered a bullet.

And there is an article in the American Rifleman this month about 410's for deer hunting
