My Dad's sister turned 82 the other day, and I called to wish her a happy birthday. The call lasted around 2 hours, and we talked about everything, and it was good to re-hear some of these things. She was telling me about an aunt of hers that was 80 years in 1943, and was raped and killed, and she had the newspaper articles, and would send me, so I expected them in a few days.

I get home yesterday and there is a box on the porch, no bid deal right? Well I get around to opening it last night, and it is full of treasures. My grandfathers pen knife, 3 photo albums from 1899 to 1950 and some other smalls. Kind of had a nice Christmas last night. I am going to include a photo of my father's dad from 1921. He was supposed to be killed in two separate mine explosions in Frontier, in 1924, and
1936, but took those days off work ,only to die of cancer in '46.112952
Just thought I would share.

He looks like a fun - loving sort that didn't take things too serious. Not too many people hamming it up in old black and white photos. Must of been a neat guy to know.

Several years ago my mom compiled a family history book for each of us kids. Copies of all the old pictures going back to the mid 1800's of my great grandparents. Family tree going back further until it gets lost. I keep it in my fireproof safe because I cannot replace it.

Mary that is great, I have a lot of folks in these I do not know. I however can rely on my grandmother, as she wrote everything down, and some where I most likely have a similar pic with a name scrawled across the front. going to be an adventure, and I know if I don't do it, my kids will not have any idea who they are. I am glad that it was done for you.

You're an extension of his body. You most likely see him everyday when you look in the mirror. Chances are you enjoy 80% of the things he did.
I know it's not the same, but close enough is great in these situations.

Even have a copy of a letter sent by my great grandparents during the Sioux Uprising describing what the military took and thus owed them, that they were at the fort(Fort Ridgely) for safety. Part of the farm was burned but the log cabin survived and later became the kitchen of the farmhouse. When we remodeled one year I recovered an arrowhead and a $20 gold piece from the logs.

Mary, did the gold peice pay for the remodel?

Grandma gave it to me as payment for gutting the old kitchen and doing all the drywall(I hate mudding drywall BTW!). That was back in the 70's when gold wasn't that high.
