This looks like a brass shotshell, but it has a rim just above the traditional 12 gauge rim... Sorta looks like a magnum ring at the bottom of a belted case... That extra belt also gives in the look of having an extraction groove... It's 3 inches long, all brass, looks to be same diameter as a 12 gauge (I didn't measure the diameter), and it has a blue-tinted plastic cover on the end. Looks like some buffering under the plastic... No markings whatsoever....

This is one piece of a collection that my Father-in-law passed down to me, from his FiL....

Here's a link to some photos...

The primer makes me think it might have been converted to boxer primed from berdan brass.

I have seen 50 bmg converted to shot shell maybe somebody converted a 20mm to a 12ga

I'm thinking it is some type of flare cartridge?

Maybe engine starting cartridge for prop type planes?. The ones I have seen were rimmed though. Frank

definitely a shot-shell primer.
the white stuff is buffer, and it looks like buck-shot inside the case.
the belt is weird though I'd almost imagine someone made their rifle into a shotgun with this brass.
without a diameter it's hard to guess what else it would be for.
a 12 ga shell is about .750 on the outside so unless someone knows of a 72-75 cal belted cartridge that ain't it.
16-20 or 24 ga would be my guess.

Very strange one here http://cartridgecollectors.org/cmo/cmo06apr.htm

Battery cup primers (shotshell type) are low pressure primers, so it is a low
pressure cartridge. I think the guess of a flare is probably correct.

The weird double rim is unlike anything I have ever seen in any flare -
they mostly look a lot like strange shotshells, brass, aluminum or brass
base with paper or plastic - like a shotshell, and odd sizes.

I could be wrong but I think it's a 12 Gauge Belted (18.5×76 mmR) from the CAWS shotgun system

CAW project was from the 1980's
