I drug out the laptop and started it. I'm using vista.
Every time I enter my password, it says the user profile service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded.
Cap lock key is not on. What the heck fo I do to solve this?

You got your boot disk?

LOL! About 1 or 2% of folks make and keep a boot disk, hope he is one of them.

Can you log in as a different user, like "admin". It is best to make several accounts right
off the bat, in case one account gets jacked up or you forget the password.

Perhaps boot to safe mode and create a new login?

I have a recovery disc, if that's what you mean. I'd hate to have to go back to the original version and do several years worth of updates.
I tried my old password and got the incorrect password message, so I'm not entering the wrong password.
I have no idea how to log in as admin. I can't get past the login screen.

Wow, that was bizarre! While trying to watch the video, the browser on my phone locked up twice, I had to restart the phone! Any way, Thanks Garyshome, renaming the folders worked.

perhaps your caps lock is on?

If you are in your computer, you should create several new accounts. Name one of
them "admin" and give it full rights, then write down the username and password and
put it in a safe place. If you can't get it to take a password for your normal account,
you should be able to log into "admin" and reset the password on the other account.

Anyone running a computer with only a single account is hanging their hat on a thin
nail. Make a backup account, or two, although it is not clear whether this would have
worked for this particular problem. Perhaps all profiles were dorked up.

F8 to a DOS line, navigate to the c:/windows dir, and type del *.pwl
That should remove the password file
next time you start it, it should ask for a password, leave it blank and hit enter.

A Google search on crack vista password will turn up lots of help.
I use http://www.diskinternals.com/ NTFS Recovery tool.
