Another Holy Book of Armaments (Handloading Ammunition, 1926)

As I walked to and fro among the earth, I became aware of the book "Handloading Ammunition" by J.R. Mattern, originally published in 1926. During the search, I found a few references to HA, mostly of the four classes of loads. IIRC, this book was written by someone that handloaded in the 1890s. Perhaps memory tricks me, but another feeling I got was that Philip Sharpe got material from Mattern, dunno. When I receive the Holy Book, I shall not count to five (that is right out!), nor will I stop at two.

Yes, I did find a somewhat worn copy out east, and thanks to the powers of Capitalism, it will come to my outstretched hands. We are not worthy!

I have it too. Mattern is interesting to read and in his career he was pretty popular. Lived in Julian Pa. not far from me so it's doubly nice to read for me.

Seen that, Wolfe has a reprint @ 1985(?), originals in very good shape hit $100 and up. I was pleased to find a decent copy for a lot less.

Reprints can be good stuff. Had so-so experience with print-on-demand, if they aren't careful, the formatting breaks columns and justification. Hard to read.

Only story I read of him was an incident with either a Krag (bolt failure?) or 1903 (receiver?) failing on him during a match.

Since you are closer than most of us, is there anything in the Julian area concerning him?

Not that I'm aware of ohland aside from years ago some of the old timers knew him. One of these days I'm going to see if his place is still standing. I was going to look for his last resting place for Precision Shooting magazine but they closed their doors before they got to him.
