Who wastes time on loads they know won't work.....on purpose?

I just scored a 500g plain base spitzer(ish) Lee mold in .457 mold and when it gets here, I intend to load it in a .454 Casull single shot rifle with Trail Boss. The chances of it working well are slim to none, but........

So, what kind of things do you waste time on just for the fun of it.

If it does work it will be a heck of a sub-sonic round!

Define 'work' and 'waste time.' Sometimes knowing what doesn't work is more valuable than knowing what does. But aside from what might be the most profound thing I have ever put in writing, I've wasted lots of time on many things I didn't think were gonna work just cause I could.

Maybe waste of time is a bit of an overstatement.
I have "wasted LOTS of time" doing things I enjoy.

ANy time you learn something it not a waste of time or energy. Even if you learn it dosnt work you learned that and know not to try it again. I can remeber working on the research and development end at work. Was a lot of fun the problem there was the engineers we worked for were yoinger and less experienced than we were. Wanted to try and test things that had been done 15 tears ago and didnt work. Good thing was we had a pretty much free hand and they would draw it up after we bbuilt it and proved it out. LOL

(http://www.levergun.com/articles/454_factoryammo.htm)Again, details are important. Consider each, apparently similar, pair and refer to Reasonable Penetration Depths table in text.
Left to right:
335 gr. Cor-Bon, 325 gr. Buffalo Bore. Despite less velocity and weight, the sharper nose allows the Buffalo Bore bullet to penetrate almost as deeply.

300 gr. Cor-Bon, 300 gr. Winchester.

525 gr. Handload, 475 gr. Handload. note bulge in case wall, just below midpoint. This is where base of bullet enters into tapered portion of case
320 gr. Cor-Bon Penetrator RN, 320 gr. Penetrator FP

I don't always go for what I know won't work but I do like to approach different things in a new direction... Maybe it will be easier.... maybe it won't who knows until you try.

.451? I've sized everything for this rifle, thus far, to .454. She shoots like a house fire with a 340g flat point.

In regards to reloading . . . I think a lot of times, questions are asked and so a person doesn't try things based on what others have tried. As long as it's "safe" (i.e. not "over loading"), I think person needs to try things for themselves. What doesn't work for others, just may work for you.

As already stated, sometimes you learn more by something not working than you do by having something that works perfect from the get go. I believe in the old saying - "nothing ventured nothing gained".

That said though . . . I've wasted a lot of time over my life time in discovering "what won't work" . . and not just in reloading! A "waste of time" . . . sometimes I thought so but in the end I was much wiser. :-)

Dean: That's good that your rifle will accept 454 my Encore will take 452+. Freedom Arms Revolvers are tight and most need 451 sizing. GP

Yeah I'm pretty happy .454 runs so well. It's a breeze to size .458 back to .454. It really open up options too.

Since we are thinking out of the box I would think that boolit/cartridge combination would be goo to try shooting zinc. I intend to do some zinc experimenting someday, and I would think it calls for a very heavy for caliber boolit.

You may have called it "wasting time", but I understood you meant "experiment".

Besides, its fun!

NEVER SAY NEVER!! Doing things nobody else has, is how we make new discoveries. Where would we be without the original explorers? Over crowded on some island I bet. Wait a minute that's where we are at now. At lest your having fun doing what you enjoy. More power to ya!

Experience is something you get just after you need it.
If we did not try things we would still be living on the ground eating grass and such.

Plenty of times I knew what wouldn't happen. I wanted to find out what would.

A man who says something cannot be done should not interupt the man who is doing it.
Lets us know how it works out.
