Hey guys, first post here although I've been lurking and reading for some time. I've only cast pure lead up to now for my flintlock and now am gonna expand out to casting boolits. A cousin is giving me a bunch of wheel weights and some lead ( about 300 lbs) that he says was melted from where it was used as some sort of pklug in large valves. He says he thinks it is 30% tin and 50% lead with some other stuff in there. How do I tell what it is and what I need to do with it to make it suitable for casting boolits?

the 50% lead and 30% tin is great for casting bullets. The problem is without knowing the remaining 20% you are outta luck. It could be antimony and then you'd have a very nice alloy, or it could be zinc and you'd waste anything you mixed with it trying to make it castable. I'd see if you can find out more about the source and use of the stuff- maybe that will lead you to the missing 20%.

Hello jgh4445, welcome to the madness. From what part of LA do you hail? I'm in nothern Cullman County myself. There are several of us from Alabama so you should feel at home.

Yeah, I re-read Rick's post and you are correct. Cullman. Well, down here we pretty much consider anything above Montgomery to be in TN!LOL!
