I am about to order a new 45/70 mold and am torn between ordering a flat nose profile versus a spire point. These will be in the plain based cast from range scrap water quenched, 400-450 grain weight range and I plan to use them for target shooting out to 500 yards.

Which do you prefer / recommend and why?

What rifle?, You can not use pointed bullets in a tubular mag. If a single shot, spire points will be more aerodynamic.

Sorry, should have mentioned that this is for an H&R Handi 45/70.

I prefer flat point boolits for 99% of my shooting.

if I were trying to shoot 500-1,000 yds and make groups then I would definitely take a long hard look at something else.
but the government profiled 405 gr rnfp made distance without too much trouble in the government trials back in 1873 or thereabouts.

it wasn't until they tried shooting a mile [with those wonderful sights] that the flat point lost out by something like 2 hits and something like 20 feet of error [airc] to a much heavier and more streamlined boolit.
I think the weight had about as much to do with it as the profile myself.

Most shooters of 500 M sillywets use bullets of over 520 grains and up to 565gr. in their 45/70s.

I use only flat point bullets in 45/70 because my cast loads are loaded to be able to use them in my marlin and in my trap door Springfield, but I see no gain in my use of the 45/70 for a pointed bullet the flatter path of the bullet will not come in to play tell after 300yards and to me my marlin is a brush gun, my Springfield just for fun when I want to shoot some thing different , I have a lot better choices in my gun safe for going past 200 yards than the 45/70. so for me why bother with a pointed bullet in 45/70

I've used both in my rolling block, but mostly with gas checks and only to 250yds. There was very little difference in the bullet drop, both fell in the same group and were indistinguishable. My rifle is slightly more accurate with the spire point bullet. The Saeco pointy bullet casts 420gr, the Lyman flatnose(no longer available) casts 450. Not a lot of difference. Both have shot groups under 1" at 100yds with iron sights.
