Hey all,

I have a bunch of a new gas checked 405 grain bullet (accurate 46-405VG) that I am looking to load up in the next day or so. Usually I would take the time to work my way up from minimum load to max while looking for that charge that my rifle likes (it's a marlin 1895G). Unfortunately I don't have the time to do that as I'm travelling to visit the wife's family and would like to have some rounds ready for them to try out. What charge in grains do you find your rifle likes best? I'm just looking for a pattern in the responses and then I am hoping to go from there. I have imr 3031, h322, imr 4064, and imr 4198.

Thanks

devinp,
Back in 2006 I did some load testing using H4198 and a Mt Molds 400 gr. bullet, ACWW alloy..
Started at 31 grs. of H4198 and ran up to 37 grs.
All fairly mild loads esp. at the bottom end..
Three shot groups at 100 m ran from 1.19" to 2.37"..
The loads were shot out of a scoped guide gun..
Not a very good test really, but that will give you a starting point as to what to expect..

devinp,

I know that boolit mold well (I designed it to be an almost exact replica to the Beartooth piledrivers, but that one has a slight front driving band) My 405 mold is a PB so I dont shoot it faster then 1400fps but I do have the 350 and the 430gr so that 405 is in the middle.

My 350gr load is 54gr of H322 (Starline case, Winchester LRP) for 1803fps (yes it can go faster but why?)
My 430gr load is 47gr of H322 (Starline case, Winchester LRP) for 1653fps

You can start your H322 load right in the middle of those and just find where it shoots the best groups.
Using IMR-3031 I would back off a few grains and see how it does, I started testing with it but then bought a 35 Rem so now my 3031 is for it.

I've got some accurate 460400L with a GC loaded up with 50gr Varget IIRC that'll put a hurtin on anything in its pass. All out, no cry babies allowed loading to be sure. Accurate enough out of my 1895GS.

I have been using JMR4198 in the 45/70 for cast and jacketed bullets , I do load all of my cast loads from the trap door load data so it can be used in my springfield and my marlin

Do you have a load for the 405 plain base, Doc? I actually have a bunch of those too. My mould throws both PB and GC.

Ive got a PB mold as well. I use it as my "plinker" with faster powders. Nothing set in stone for those. Whatever I have on hand to lob lead at reactive targets.

49 gr of that 4064 will be a decent load with the GC'd bullet. Work up to 55 gr if your game.
