I thought I might try a different, slower powder in this than Promo and since I have a bunch of Unique will start there. Since I have to seat this boolit deeper I am going to reduce the charge some but I can find no data on this boolit using Unique. 5.3gr is min. with the closest I've found in a book and other places in my research recommend 5.0gr starting point.

Does 5.0gr start sound right or should I start even lower? Worst that will happen is it won't feed correctly but I'd like a base to avoid wasting powder.

I have a data manual from Alliant that lists load data for almost all their powders in various caliber from 2001. They list a low pressure target load for a 230 grain lead bullet for 45acp using unique at 5.0 grains. The pressure is quite low at 11,800psi.
There is room for a heavier powder charge. They didn't list a max load so work up as usual.

Lee Modern Reloading states for a 230 gr lead bullet 5.1 gr in a starting load with Unique and 5.8 for max. Lyman like to use bullet types unlike Lee that goes by weight only. So Lyman #49 for the 225 gr 452374 starts at5.5 gr of Unique and max of 7.3. Hope that helps.

5.8 is a max load you might want to back off 10%

Alliant must be where i got the 5gr from. I have #49 and the 225gr was slightly different. I think i will start at 5gr or even 4.8gr. With 200gr boolits i dont worry much but 230gr is getting kinda far into the case with this profile

I shoot that exact boolit unsized and seated to 1.190" COL with 5.0g Unique all the time. Average MV is 800 fps. Great shooting round without beating up the gun or your hand. Back when I started reloading, I used the Lee dippers and wound up loading a bunch with 4.0g Unique. They shot out fine and operated the action properly, but I got a lot of gas blowback into my face, sooty cases and a pile of flakes deposited on the floor in front of the shooting bench at the end of the session. So even that low of a charge will work, just not very well.

Yep at around 1.190" 5 grains of Unique will yield you right around 800 fps give or take a bit depending on barrel length. 5.5 grains with the 230 TC design at the above COAL will yield you around 840-850 fps.

Im at about 1.185 - 1.187 to reliably feed in my gun so 5gr will put right where i am looking to be speed wise. Thanks for the answers. Ill start at 4.6gr and move there
