I took my Ubertti third Dragoon out this evening & shot six shots at a paper target
20 yds.Now I was shooting Lee 200 grain conicals I cast. They seemed to look as they were tumbling?

Why, any ideas?????

Try SOFT pure lead round balls. That's what it was intended to shoot.

They were. Round Balls are the answer. I believe .457 for Dragoons, and Walkers. Not sure though. My Navy takes .454. .50gns of 3f and RB, and you have a great combination. RBs are faster to load also. I like the Dragoon, someday, I hope to get a #3. If you sharpen the loading lever notch, recoil does not have as much effect on it. They just do not fit that tightly when they are new. I like them though. They also shoot high.

I would try them a little farther away and see if they're really tumbling.
Also, make sure your target backer is decently stiff.
A limp backer causes tearing that looks like tumbling.
I have a 1st model Dragoon (Uberti) that shoots insanely small groups at 25 yards using 40 grs of 3ffg Swiss and a round ball. I plan on getting the same mold you're using and give it a twirl.

+1 it'll rip instead of punch.

Well I have heard that many times. The only thing is the Ubertti,s have a 1 in 16 twist as Pietta
a 1 in 32 twist.I would think 1 in 16 would be fast enough but maybe I,m wrong?

Also the target did have a lot of holes in it I taped the paper target too.I will try again.

Thanks guys Fly

1:16 will certainly shoot boolits well. It's a typical twist for many other .45 cal modern guns.

Are you certain your Dragoon is 1:16"?

For a pistol meant to only shoot RB's it the loading window sure is oblong...

Looking at how long of a bullet the different twist rates will handle tells the tale.
If the bullet really is tumbling then there's some other problem.

In 2002 Uberti tightened the twist of the Dragoons.

Yea I checked it & it's 1 in 16.It is most likely the backing. It is a ole tin sigh that has many holes
shot threw it.I just taped a paper target over.I will try again.

I use the same bullets in my long twist Pietta, and they still do fine at 25. Not so well at 50 though. Maybe you're pulling the trigger all wrong. ;)

200 gr conicals of soft lead through a 1:16 will turn and stabilize out to 20 yards at anything over 20 grs FFFg. Unless they are undersized. No barrel crown issues?
