I went to the Ohio gun collectors association show today and had a good time and found some deals.
One of which was a five pound coffee can half full of round nose, gas check 30 cal boolits. They were marked as 200 grain, and when I weighed them when I weighed them, the were 203-ish.
the boon is that they are miked at 313" which is cool. I'm thinking these will go into rotation as boolits for the Krag.
Cost, 10$. I'll count them up later.

Great deal! Are the bases sharp? The one in the pic kinda looks rounded from here.

Looks like a Lyman 311284.

Sure does, and designed for the Krag too.

Good finds - what's the throat size on your krag?

Hey PB

hey Duke! Glad to hear from you. I'm still working on the oilcloth project, it just got sidelined while I have been working on my antique house.

I still haven't slugged the throat yet, I'm hoping to knock out that project this week. I've just been slammed working on my house and at work.
.311" still chambers smoothly, so I'm betting there is still a wee bit a room in there. It is interesting, the bore size was dead on .308" I was expecting a little more of a generous bore size, but go figure.

Bore size .308"? Bore size is the diameter of the bore before it is rifled, which translates to the diameter across the lands. Groove diameter is the diameter across the bottom of the grooves. Most .30s are .299-.302 bore diameter.

Simple test for bore diameter with that bullet: push it into the muzzle nose first, and if the lands leave engraved marks on the side of the nose it likely will be nicely supported when fired. If bore-ride portion is not engraved by the lands the chances for good accuracy are iffy. As stated the 311284 is the classic bullet for the Krag, but also great in the '06. Don't hesitate to try them in a .30-30 too, with a casefull of 4831 it may surprise you. Nice score!

Sorry, mistyped, groove diameter is what I meant to type. The bore diameter fell in right at 0.0300" Overall the condition of the barrel surprised me. It makes me wonder if the rifle was re-barreled in recent history. Considering the age, it would not be beyond the realm of possible.
I pushed the boolit in to the muzzle last night and found it was a snug fit, lightly engraved with the rifling. This should be an interesting experiment moving forward.
I had not considered using it in the 30-30. That too should prove to be interesting.
