View Full Version : Is it safe to shoot Lee 324-175 sized to 0.314 from Mosin 91/30?

Recently got Lee 324-175 mold and made some bullets. Sized them to 0.314" and would like to try them GCed from my MN 91/30 (bore slug 0.314/0.3020" respectively). I'd like to try it because of eroded throat - 0.328" at the chamber end and 0.316" 1/4" further. Bullets after sizing came out 0.3145" in dia and 1/64" deep lube grooves. Is it worth/safe to try?
Any opinions very appreciated.
P.S Taking into account L.Gibson opinion I made pics and got this tread updated.
Throat erosion pretty visible on pics: (the barrel I'm talking is first on the left)

And bullets looks like this after sizing:

.3145 is gonna be a bit undersize for that .314 groove dia. Rule of thumb is to go, at least, .002 over groove dia. and, 'specially in old milsurps', I've obtained my best results using the largest (dia.) that will chamber without resizing the boolit nose.

It's quite safe, I have sized the 323470, the 323471 and the GB 325-190-FN down to .314, .316 and .318 and they worked extremely well in barrels of close to those sizes.

BTW; the throat on your MN is probably not eroded. The actually reamed them that way.

The diameter of the chamber neck is the deciding factor when it comes to using over sized boolits. If the chamber neck is too tight for the case neck when the boolit is seated then chamber pressure is increased, more so when J-word bullets are used.

I know this is not a "perfect method" but if your neck diameter is still the same size or less than a fired neck from the same chamber I think its safe to say you are ok. You should not feel any resistance when chambering also.

As far as out-right danger is concerned I don't think a oversized neck (due to a oversize bullet) is as great as concern with a lead bullet as with a jacketed. If the neck does not have room to expand and relese a jacketed bullet pressure will go through the roof. I think a lead bullet would simply squese out.

As far as diameter of your boolit goes. I use a Lee 160gr that drops at .3135 and my 91-30 with .314ish groove diameter shoots then just fine. You can't always go by rule of thumb.

Another thing that seems to slide by very often and is as important as the groove diameter is the bore diameter. Another is the condition of the rifling.

Keep in mind that when you force that .313" boolit into that .300ish bore the metal needs to go somewhere and the most likely place for it to go is into the grooves. This is why you can often get away with shooting a boolit that rule of thumb says is not big enough.

OP: Your boolits look very nice. I have a .314" size dia. I may need to visit this. :)
