I am thinking of jumping on one and would like some feed back on the gun? And are they Micro Groove or Ballard?

Thank You everyone again for all of the help. And by the way it is all of YOUR FAULT lol. I have one 1894SS and looking for another lol. So what people say is true the sickness is catching lol. :drinks:

Mine has a microgroove barrel. I mostly use gas checked boolits in it, but have had some success with plain based sized .359".

Mine also has a micro-groove barrel. I shoot the Lee 158 gr. plain base at about 1250 fps.
Micro-groove is a little more sensitive to boolit fit.They are really fun guns and can also be very usefull but that is just an excuse to by one. If you have a 357 handgun you have another excuse,you don't have to buy more dies. It is easy to handle so your lady can shoot to(that one didn't work for me, had to buy her a S&W snubby). I could think of some more but that should do for now. I have four Marlins,22, 357,30-30 and 45-70 so I am not the one to ask if another one is in order.

I don't recall what the rifling style mine is but I believe it's from the seventies or eighties . I have used a heavy lead bullet with gas check and double end wadcutters and both work very well .

JesterGrin;

I own a Marlin M94 in 357. My carbine has Microgroove rifling but I have heard that some have Ballard type rifling.

I have over 2500 rounds through mine and find it a constant delight for casual shooting practice.

I load all Microgroove barrels with oversize bullets with outstanding success. The mold I use casts at 0.362 and I shoot them as-cast. At this size the cases do not need to be sized either so I can skip the sizing step in reloading procedure.

My load is 6.5 grains 700X under the typical 158 grain SWC bullet for about 1400 ft/sec and 5x1.500 groups at 50 yards using the barrel sights.

Good evening,
Forrest

Are you sure it is .362 and not .359? .362 seems a bit large by about .005.

All the pre safety Marlin 94s in 357Mag that I have seen have been MicroGrove. I know mine shoots just fine. Let us know how yours shoots when you get it.

Don't be afraid of the Micro groove myth, they are fine rifles you just have to watch how yo load.
