I got a bunch of lyman ideal 358246 U cast boolits from a friend and want to shoot them up. I loaded 50 on a star progressive I have that is set to 2.9gr bullseye. I shot them over the chronograph today from a 686 4". They averaged somewhere between 550-600fps. Perfect kids/plinking load but since I have never shot lead that "slow" (slowest till now was my 1911 @715fps) I would like to know if I need to worry about a bullet getting stuck in the barrel? I could seat them one band deeper and that might give me a few more fps but if at all possible I would like to continue using the star @ 2.9gr bullseye. For lube I'm using NRA 50/50.

Thanks

What is the weight of the bullet? How does it group?

They average between 148-149gr. Didn't shoot for accuracy much as I was shooting over the chronograph but it was easy enough to knock down all the 6" plates at 15 yards.

I'd call that a safe load in 38spl cases. A tad more than a 10% reduction from the old standby of 3.5grs of BE.

Jes wonderin', why are you fixed on 2.9 Bullseye?

The star progressive press I have has the 2.9BE plate for the powder dispenser and I hear they aren't cheap to get new ones for. If it plinks safe I'm all for KISS.

That 2.9gr load will work just fine. I load a 2.5gr load in 38sp with a 130swc for my wife.
Go for it!!!

I made my Star's charge bar "semi-adjustable". I enlongated (oval shaped) the drop hole (I think, it was 35 years ago that I sold it) and made a pc of brass fit the other side of the hole, with the "main" bar drilled and tapped for a set screw that moved the new, homemade pc move back and forth, along the line of the charge bar. This let me adjust it about plus or minus one grain of Bullseye.

at one point, LA gunsmith Jim Hoag was selling an adjustable charge bar for the Star loader, so if you ran a "want ad" on Ebay, you might get a hit.

You mention "kids load." You should shoot a bunch and make sure they will reliably exit the barrel. At that speed you could get one stuck, which could be disastrous if a child is shooting and pulls the trigger again. I'm not saying your load is unsafe, just that it is on the slow side.
