I want to make a boolit shooting hunting rifle out of one of my old guns. I have a T-53 Mosin with a slick action and an old Winchester model 94 30-30. The Winchester needs a trip to the smith and some new sights the Mosin is ready to go as is. Both should be plenty of gun for Mississippi deer shots would be 150 yards or closer-closer preferred. Is there any pros or cons to reloading boolits for either one of these guns, the Mosin eats gallery loads like its going out of style seems accurate too. I have never tried boolits in the Winchester ,does the tube magazine give any grief?

The 30-30 Winchester is one of the all time great cast bullet cartridges.

Further, Lee makes a two-cavity 170 grain flat-nosed gas check mold that has a sterling reputation for accuracy. For $20 you get one of the best bargains in the casting world.

This combination works beautifully in the Model 94, and the flat point bullet is made for tubular magazines.

You can go here and get H4895 data for 170 grain jacketed bullets
http://hodgdon.com/

and then go here for the Hodgdon 60% rule
http://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/H4895%20Reduced%20Rifle%20Loads.pdf

Start at 60% of the max load Hodgdon states for H4895 in the 170 gr. SIE FP section and work your way up to 1800 fps. You'll have your hunting rifle and load.

Take care, Tom

You might spend a little time at www.castbullet.com (http://www.castbullet.com). Juniors website has some good articles on the .30-30 and cast boolits. Time there is time well spent.

Your Mosin should also be a good cast shooter. Do a slug of the barrel to see what yours is and what size boolit you need. There is lots of information here about loading this cartridge,

That M94 30-30 and the 311041 are literally "made for each other":guntootsmiley:

That's what I'd go for although that MN can do a serviceable job of it also. Just need to get a cast bullet that fits is all.
