Softwood?? Everything I make is hardwood, at least all my furniture, most of my turnings, and all of my cutting boards.

I'm about to make a butcher block freestanding from yellow pine. It is pretty hard for a pine. Not the preferred material, but in Florida the hardwoods are expensive. Pine is the least expensive and I believe it is plenty hard enough with close enough grain to work fine for a home application.

Yeah, Yellow Pine is the closest you get and it wears well. Makes good floors, too. Are you using edge or end grain for your butcher block?

It will be end grain. Think I want to make a 3 in thick top then a lower piece with inlaid marble like the other piece I made. Join them with rare earth magnets. Gonna be one heavy piece.

Post pics when you are done, please. If you could, a couple in progress showing the design would be good as well. Joinery especially.

Helped make a cutting board for Oprah Winfrey's house a number of years ago. No special joinery but was solid Hard Maple. Two or three inches thick, 2 feet wide, 6 or 8 feet long. One heavy chunk of wood.

The tools! He uses real tools! Other than the table saw he uses real tools and did you notice the blocking cuts for the saw kerf? That is old world craftsmanship. I don't know three people in our whole town who would even use a hand plane anymore.

Norsk bubba could save a fair amount of time using a marking knife instead of a pencil,,,,,,,[smilie=l:

Regarding sharp, if you're at all interested, google "scary sharp".

Actually being able to carry on a conversation and hearing the birds is a real enticement to unplug,,,,
