Hey guys, I have been doing a bunch of shooting with my 35 Remington these days. I plan to use a 190 Ranchdog gas checked bullet this year for deer season. As you may know, 35 Rem brass is rare to say the least. I was running low so as usual I use factory loaded ammo to get brass for my cast rifle shooting.

This box of 35 Rem came from my grandpa's garage when he passed away. He was a handloader but didn't load for 35 Rem. I had a case failure and wonder what you guys think happened. How old do you think this ammo is?

Thanks for the help. I shot about 40 of my cast loads after the case failure. I guess I really lucked out nothing seems to be damaged!

The same case is pictured. It failed (cracked/split) in two different places.

I've had some older factory ammo do the same thing in 35 Rem and a couple other cartridges. The brass was not annealed correctly for long term storage or the powder has deteriorated and some of the acidic residue has attacked the brass.

I suggest 2 things; 1st pull the bullets, throw away the powder, deprime the cases, anneal the neck shoulder area and then reload. That will solve the neck splits but if the case body is brittle or weakened it won't solve that. 2nd is to pull the bullets to reload and discard the cases and powder and call it a wash.

That 'vintage' of Remington is probably late 60's early 70's.... IF they spent all that time in the garage in Indiana?? then they have seen almost a half century of hot and cold. Even if annealed correctly when made brass can 'season' crack over many years.

I concur with Larry on a 'fix'. IF an incipient crack has not already taken place you can probably save the cases.

Plus that green box is blue looks like it sat in the sun a bit

Larry summed it up well and I think that I would take his second option. Corrosion looks like it may be an issue with that brass.

Thanks for the help. I will pull the bullets and scrap the brass.

I have seen bullet jackets also 'split' from 'season cracking'. Terminal performance could be affected.

I will keep that in mind and make sure to use them for fouling/sighting shots. I try to only hunt with cast bullets so hopefully I dont need to worry about terminal performce with jwords!
