I am looking for a good IMR 4064 load. I am using 62 gn cast lead/linotype 1:1 ratio. I have lubed these bullets and they have gas checks. I am shooting them out of an AR15 rifle. Please help.

I started to get good function and decent accuracy in my rifle at 19 grains.

my 16" carbine started functioning reliably at 20.5 grains, my 20" though not so much. My 16" is still an infant and my 20" is a newborn with under 50 rounds through it. I imagine as I go, I may be able to drop the load little.

Unsure how accuracy is as I haven't gotten that far, as I use these for plinking under 50 yards.

I have a thread with with the same question. Answers I received was to start at 16 grains and go up until reliable functioning. I recommend a search on Larry Gibson's posts and threads, he has lots of experience and writing on the matter.

i use air cooled clip on wheel weights with Lars red carnauba, Noe Saeco 55 grain clone boolit, gators gas checks, and sized to ~.225".

@cheese1566 - thanks for the help and suggestion! Can't wait to load them up. I think you are right on with your load. I also have a 20 in that does not like 4064 loads that cycle fine in my 16 in. I have needed to give them a little larger powder charge if I want them to cycle in both. This was for factory bullets not cast though. Looks like the same principles apply. Thanks again!

The 4064 is a pretty slow powder for a .223 62 grain bullet. I would think that reduced loads would be radical. You could fill the case full up and still be under H335 or 3031 velocities but may help with accuracy. Theoretically it should work out just fine for hard cast though. No sudden pressure and a smooth launch.
You will also get a full muzzle blast. A hoot to shoot at night it is.
I understand that we have to make the best of whatever we can get right now too. I have to use 4064 for my .308 Win. and would much prefer 4895.

Yep on the powder of 4064...the only reason I am using it is because i have about a half of 16 pound keg under my bench I received from my brother in law ten years ago. He got it when him and his dad reloaded years ago. I would say this stuff if probably at least 30 years old. Always stored in good climate controlled conditions and looks/smells healthy. (I always carefully load up and test when using it and never go full power loads from load data.)

When I get some good preferred ball powder, I'll start loading on my progressive...4064 doesn't like my powder measures.
