Anybody using IMR 4198 in the 357 Max? I have found some information on it and would like to try it. Will be using it for a rifle load shooting 35-200 boolits.

H110, H4227, and mil surp WC820 (my lot is similar to Accurate #9) are the powders with which I've had success. IMR4198 did not give me good velocity from this small case.

I found one load on it with no velocity given. The author stated he was getting "1" groups at 100yds" but being posted on the internet is not really believable. It's not a very popular powder in this caliber but it has a place, a good place, in many other calibers. I've been doing a lot of load development over the last three months with the .357max in a very accurate Browning Low Wall and there are several powders that give great velocity and accuracy. Try Reloader7, WW296/H110, 2400, and IMR4227. All have loads available that deliver good velocity and good accuracy.

It will work....it will be kinda slow however......what is your intended use/purpose of said load? that is the question that needs answered.

For pure hunting use FPS with accuracy ventures Vhitvouri N-120 and Alliant MP300 are tough to beat....if you are not hunting with your toy....you may be quite happy with 4198.

here is what I have in my notes for IMR 4198 in a 14" 357 Max TC:

Remington brass, small rifle primer
220 gr cast truncated cone bullet, seated long
IMR 4198 -
19.5 gr - 1450 ft/sec
21.0 gr - 1570 ft/sec
22.0 gr - 1640 ft/sec

The 21.0 grain load appeared to be the most accurate so I tried it in a 18" carbine barrel with a 4X scope. I lucked 3 shots into 7/8" at 100 yards. Velocity in the 18" barrel was +/-1800 ft/sec.

I do plan on hunting with it. If the 1800 fps load shoots accurate that will be great. I have some test loads loaded with 2400 also that I'm going to try. Just trying to use the powder I have to workup some loads. Finding any powder around home is kinda hard right. I'll try these loads and I can always test more later.

funny thing, if you load a Glen Larson design 180 gr WFN with that same 21.0 grains of IMR4198 it barely breaks 1700 '/sec.
as mentioned there are better powders if you have a need for speed.

Tried out the 4198 in the 357 Max this evening. Loaded some test rounds with 4198 and 2400, the 2400 didn't do well but I found a starting point with the 4198. Average velocity was 1696. I'm going to load some more and bump it up some. Boolit was a 35-200 sized to .358". Shots were at 100 yds. I'll be happy if the accuracy is there, where I hunt shots are rarely over 60 to 70 yds.
