Question about lead wire....

I have been buying solder at garage sales and estate sales for many years. A few times I got a wire that looked a little different. They were about the same diameter as most solder, but darker than solder, softer, and had a very fine steel wire in the center (which I found after melting the material around it). I just ran across a spool with that and it is marked "pure lead wire with steel core". Anyone have any idea what that was used for?

I don't know what it was for, but i had a friend that used something like that for smoothing weld in auto body repair.

I believe, but can not document, that its for an auto feeding soldering tool.
