View Full Version : Makers of underhammer actions?

I've got a friend who's planning a heavy-barrel x-sticks/light bench gun, and considering an underhammer. We know about the Billinghurst kit available from the various suppliers; are there any other makers of actions I should bring to his attention?

(And no, the use of an underhammer won't preclude competition under the rules of the various organizations, because he doesn't shoot competition.)

Thanks!

There was a lot of talk about the Billinghurst kits on a muzzle loading forum, something about the molds being stolen from the original designer. As the story goes the molds were at a casting company and the company went out of business and sold the molds without the owners permission.

I also make under hammer actions when time permits.

Good people to deal with, they have the cast steel frame like the later H&A from Numrich at about $150.

Thanks guys.

I've never dealt with Deer Creek (no website and my hearing makes phone use too difficult to bother with) so I didn't even think of them. And I totally forgot about the Allen action. I'll get the list forwarded to my friend, and we'll see what he comes up with.

Am working on a deal for a heavy barrel for myself, so I may be following the same course soon. Thanks again!

Jim

I bought a parts kit from an outfit called Blue Grouse. They advertised a 100% money back guarantee. The hammer & trigger engagement geometry was off and the trigger would not safely hold the cocked hammer. I called them, and they told me to take it up with the foundry. They would not honor the guarantee.

Well, my barrel arrived, haven't heard from my friend to see how his barrel search is going. I found a very nice 35"x1.25" round (not octagon) Montana barrel in .54 cal. Eventually (if I don't get too sidetracked by other projects), I'll probably build a Billinghurst-inspired action and use it as a target rifle.

++1 for John Taylor, he makes some fine looking under-hammer actions.
