No problems not doing the bases? Leading, smoking, gas cutting?

From prior threads I got the idea you had to fully PC the boolit. I've got all the PC equipment (from other hobbies), but the thought of having to stand all the boolits up on a bed of nails to get 100% coverage kept me with TL. If you get any on the base, is it as bad as a badly cast base? I like nice boolits; but far prefer accurate ones.

Thanks

Have you ever shot a pb cast boolit with success before?
No different with PC. The base does not matter one bit.

Yes, and I've found the bases to be more important than the boolit nose. An uneven base is going to do strange things as the boolit exits the barrel.

I've never put my bullets on nails to bake. I spray them with my HF gun at about 40 PSI. Then I transfer the bullets to a cookie sheet pan with a pair of hemostats (HF too). I wrap the top of the pan with nonstick aluminum Reynolds Wrap and then bake!

An uneven base.......very bad......but PC will not correct your bad molding drops if they are coming out uneven.

PC does nothing on the base other than look perrrrrrrrdy. And you will be the only one that ever sees it. None of my ESPC boolits have coatings on the bottom. Grease coated Pb boolits have not protection from the grease. And we have shot those for many MANY years. If you are concerned about cutting, use a GC like you always did.

Most of us just sit the boolits on the NSAF and spray away.

Thanks, that helps a lot. Some of the pictures seemed to have partial PC on the bases. Just wondering if that contributed to an uneven base. Looks like DT will give a uniform total coating. Got everything but the air soft pellets. I'll pick them up tomorrow.

Yeah but how much is 1# of powder and a cool-whip container cost? under 5.00 for me, I cant remember how much the BB's were but I have an airsoft gun that I have fun with so I cant really add the cost to powder coating.

I enjoy PC the bullets. I use the color of the bullet as a reference to the lot/load/charge. Next color will be zombie killing green! I'll need to make them loads hot enough with my Bullseye GP to kill 2 or 3 with 1 shot!

I ran some 200gr hollow points through my 1911 this weekend. I used Hi-Tek lube, bullets were accurate and barrel easily cleaned when finished.

OURFLAT: How did you get the color ? If you mixed it, what were the ratios? Or bought it where? They look REALLY good by the way.

I purchased the PC from a vendor on EBay that sells various colors. The company is called powdercoatpaints. My order was filled in a few days and they were very good.

The color you see is called copper brown and its high temp to boot!

I have gone to the shake and bake method. Its a lot less messy and I can be Casting while a batch is cooking with one batch cooling and another waiting.
So far my #1 reason for coating?
They work in my bullet feed dies.

E-Bay purchase .. All $6 lb. purchased in a 5 color assortment. All has performed extremely well using the HF gun. It performs poorly using the tumble method.

Question: will a standard toaster oven work to bake the boolits, or do you really need a convection oven?

Thanks

ourflat
06-06-2014, 05:12 PM
The key is baking the bullets at 400 degrees for at least 10 minutes. If you can find a toaster oven that can bake 400 @ 10 minutes then it will work.

Please check me in this senerio: tumble boolits in the powder, bake for (at least) 10 minutes, let cool and run them through the sizer (I have Lee push through). I realize that I may have oversimplified this but am I correct?

kenn

My boolits are dropping at .360-.361 and I will run through sizer to .357. I was planning on running through sizer first, coating, then sizing again. I was first going to try running unlubed boolits straight from casting through the lee sizer die, but should I give them a very brief shot of hornady one shot and then bath them in mineral spirits after first sizing for a smother operation and a good PC coat? I've read that lead build up sometimes occurs and sometimes doesn't when sizing unlubed...

I size my 45 ACP 230 RN through my 4500 Lyman lube sizer. That's it, nothing more and no leading issues...
