Got up in the woods to test some new .308 loads. Rem. 700 with Lee 312-155 gator checks and mix lube(BAC and CR) BHN 14-15 weight right at 163gr. Three loads tested. Powder was SR4759 19,20,and 21gr were tested.
19gr @ 1702fps
20gr @ 1773fps
21gr @ 1845fps
All 5 shot groups were under 1 1/2" at 100 yards off a portable shooting bench. Conditions were pretty calm.
So far so good. I'll work up the charge and see if the groups tighten. I believe max is around 27gr, so I still have some room to play.

Try a tad of dacron filler. Seems to shrink my groups a bit even with 2400.

That is good shooting. What type of Remington did you use? Heavy varmint barrel or sporter

The Lee 312-160 is a good shooter also. A high powered scope will tighten groups...I use a Tasco 24 power target scope with target dot retical.

I am getting better with my Remington 700 VS

That's a fine result. Have you tried a heavier bullet?

Yes. I have tried the NOE 311365 190gr with dismal results.

With those results, it reminds "if it ain't broke …"

I have found that with SR 4759, as you increase the powder charge, group size increases. AA5477, behaves the same way, in the 308 Winchester. I found this out by necessity, the lower charges are not enough to cycle the action of my AR.

Normal with any powder, still need a velocity and spin rate that works. But we are losing 4759 again.

Same load shoots equally well with 2400. I just happen to have more of the SR4759 on hand right now.
These are the only two powders I've tried so far.

I'm using a 155gr fn in my 308. 20gr's of IMR 4227 will shoot an honest inch for me. SR 4759 didn't do as well.

I have lots of IMR 4227. I'll try that one as well.

My factory 308 Remington VS with its long whippy 26" hammer forged barrel has always been a big challenge to get small bug hole groups (cast or jacketed bullets), but it is possible. The 1/12 twist seems to like lighter weight lead bullets best, especially the fatter .312 AK47 C.E. Harris designs by Lee. Be sure to seat the gas check deep and square on base of bullet and use a good soft lube. I like using Linotype alloy because it makes a more consistant bullet.

A custom target rifle with tighter chamber and stiff target barrel would make things lots easier, but more boring.

Waco, what load did you run the 311365 with? I found with my testing that I had to drive it pretty hard. My load ended with 40GR of 4831SC. That load would punch quarter size groups on a regular basis for me.

The Lee 312-160 is a good shooter also.

Are you having any leading issues with that tumble lube? What are you sizing to?

I'd have to check my notes.

When you fill with dacron do you just fill to the top and compress it with the boolit?

There is a sticky on filler by Larry Gibson. I lightly tamp down till it fills to the neck. Don't make a wad out of it. Didn't believe it till I tried it. Haven't tried my annealed GC yet either but it should help. I gained ~ 100 fps with 17 gr 2400 in 308 vs 16 gr 4227 in 300BO, same boolit, no GC. Who'd of known. 2 weeks to get my 145C BO mould from Tom. I'll be casting in the morning.

I got slight leading after firing 50 rounds thru a hot barrel trying different style bullets. I have since switched back to LBT Soft Blue lube. I size in two steps .311 then to .309 with Lee sizers. I lube my bullets in RCBS Lubramatic with oversize .310 die.

Strait alox smokes alot when fired. Almost like shooting black powder.

Thank you Popper,

Here is the sticky if anyone else is looking (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?109280-The-proper-use-of-fillers). Just when I think I have read all the stickys someone point out one I missed. If I could get better at the search functions I'm sure I could find winning lottery numbers on this site!

I'm not sure. I'd like to get the speed up a bit. My goal is a 10" steel plate at. 490 yards.
Good cheep practice. Maybe slower powders are in order.

Never put them over a chrony to see how fast they were moving. Second kid showed up and the shooting stuff got put away for a while. Never made it past 100 yard testing or I would have clocked the load for use at longer ranges. I have a thread I did back along on my 308 testing with some info in it.
