Hellow everyone I have a question. I have been reloading for several years but new to casting. If I slug a barrel and it comes out to let's say .312 how many thousandths over do I need to size bullets. Caliber is 7.62x54

Thank you

0.002" will be fine.

Rifles in that size range seem to do well with .002 to .003 over groove diameter.

Typical .308 rifle usually will do best with .311, but some work well or even best
with .310 and some report great results with as little as .309. I think GCs are
helping with the .309s to keep from leading, but that is just unproven opinion.

So if I have a bullet that is .312 and size to .314 I have another question. The die set that I use has a 308 and a 311 expanding button. Will a .314 bullet go in the shell and will I need some type of universal case bell die if so who makes a good die. Please bear with me as I get started in casting. Thank you all in helping and in giving advice.

I, and I'll bet danged near every one of the members of this forum, have occasionally used needle-nosed pliers to effect a flare in the mouth, when the right M-die, or whatever, isn't available. Just a couple of spins generally will open it up sufficiently.

How do you size a .312 to .314?

Slight flare and the .312 should work fine.

Sorry I mean if I have a barrel that slugs at .312 and have a bullet that is .314 and my expander opens the case up to .311 I will need to flare the case mouth some. Will the case expanded to take a .311 bullet flared at the mouth not resize the bullet a thousandth or so on seating.

I think I have your same setup. I use lee dies and they have both 308 and 311 expanders. I use the 311 expander and the lee flaring tool to flare the case mouth until the boolit will seat without shaving lead. My mold is also a .312 mold and sizing to .314 thru a push thru sizer only sizes down to 314 any part of the boolit that is over 314. It doesn't bump the size up. I powder coat my 314 sized boolits and then size again. The powder coat adds a couple thousandths and the boolits shoot much better.

Here's an example from my 30-30 setup:

My boolits are sized to .311. I replaced the neck expander in my 30-30 sizing die with one meant for the 7.62x54R (I think it measures .308). It gives me .003 neck tension.

I slightly bell the case mouths with a pair of needle nose pliers; just slightly. Just enough to seat the boolit without shaving lead.

I have a .311 M die as well, but I still bell the mouth.
