Would it be possible to drive a gaschecked and powder coated Lee C309-120-R to 2700 fps in a 26" .308 Win AR-10?

I'm looking for a light bullet that will still give me major power factor (320) for competition shooting and I want a flat shooting trajectory up to 350 yards.

Wouldn't it come apart at that velocity? I'm just asking; I have no experience at that speed.

I haven't chronied my 165 PCd in the 308 24" bbl but it does 2450 (406K) in the carbine, same load, different upper. Accuracy was close to the same. 165 @ 25-2600 should make major. 120*2700 = 324K, if I figured right.

165 at 2500-2600 would make power factor 412-429, way too much recoil.
I'm thinking the 120-140gn would make for 320 power factor with flat trajectory and lots of gas volume to make the compensator work.

You might read my test of 314299s in the 7.62x54R and 225428s in the 223 in an AR in; http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?236746-Test-of-leadman-s-225438s-and-314299s-at-high-velocity

While not the .308W it is close enough. The velocity is easy as mentioned but accuracy is another story. If your rifle has a 10" twist or even a 12" twist you may find 2700 fps difficult to achieve with accuracy with any cast bullet, PC'd or not. That lighter weight bullet has a very poor BC for 350 yard shooting. A better bullet would be NOE's 311465 if you really want to try. I suggest if you try a hard alloy of mostly linotype composition or with Cu added, HT'd and PC'd. I also suggest lubing after PCing.

I heard that some of the guys are using the powder coating from Harbor Freight. What is it named, from HF? Also I read some where on here that they are using their pure lead boolits powdered coated and getting no leading, does this really work? If I do this what is the process of spraying the boolits, is it just like spray painting with any can of spray paint? Does the base of the boolit need to be sprayed also?

Go over to the alternative coating section and you'll find all your answers.

I do the tumble coat. Just sprinkle a little powder over your projectiles then shake em up in a plastic tub. Set them on Non-stick foil and bake in the toaster oven. Very easy!

The hardest part is standing them all on their bases. Try standing up 100 .308 cal bullets on a tray and not having them fall over! Ha, that's a chore, but I managed last Sunday.

I am sure you cain't shoot pure lead PC'ed you need to read the stickies I am planing to do the same speed in a 308 with wheel waight BHN 12 PC;ed but [I] need to read a lot more. everything you need is in this fororm you just have to search for it. the older members get tired of repeting themselves. Some are leaving because of people wanting instant answers. and I still need them. end of rant JerryL
