Im going to slug the barrel on my 30-30 with a soft 358 boolit and this may be a silly question but does the type of oil i use to coat the barrel first matter? Ive read the threads and did not see this in one. I cant see how one oil would be better than another but you never know.

Im going to use Kroil i think unless there is a reason not to

Kroil is fine. So is ordinary light mineral oil.

I spray a little shot of dillon case lube and slug while its still wet. Its just beeswax thinned with alcohol.
Baby oil mixed with mineral spirits works great too and cleans the bore while you are slugging it.

I use lanolin on the slug and wiped in the bore

I use STP Oil treatment.
I clean it out using brake cleaner though. Don't want any of that stuff still in the barrel when you go shooting !

I have Engine Assembly Lube at hand, so I used that. Since it was made to with stand tight tolerances in a cold engine, figured this would be perfect for it.

I've never used oil.

All of the above will work just fine. If it were me, I would roll that boolit on a plate or something really flat and hard to get it down to maybe .320 or so. Should be easier to start in the muzzle that way. just a thought. Mike

I was thinking he should start with a smaller diameter lead bullet, sinker, or buckshot as well.

There seems to be different opinions on the size to start with. Some say next caliber up, some always use 50Cal. That seems to be pretty hard to me. I thought the boolit profile would help to start it and with PB would work nicely.

That's my method. I bump them up with my vise to just a little larger than my groove diameter.

If you took an empty 30 carbine case, filled it with soft lead and used a kinetic (hammer style) bullet puller to get the slug out of the case, that would be a good. You could bump that up a little in a vise, or as you start the slugging process, it will bump up.

I used the method hiram posted and it works really well. As far as oil, I just used gun grease (no special reason, I had it laying around).

Hoppe's #9 gun oil for or you could use 3 n 1 oil but Hoppe's smell better.

Now that you mention that I just bought some brass from zman and in the 357Mag was a 30 Carbine. Maybe he is clairvoyant and saw what was going to happen!
