Last year I bought a NOE 360477 mold to use for a accurate 50 yd load. After sizing to .358 dia in a Lyman 450 and loading in 38 spcl brass with Bullseye and Unique I had a problem with poor accuracy and leading in the cylinder and thats how I left it till now.
Looking at the boolits I cast last year I discovered that the portion above the crimp wasn't sized, still checking .360 dia.
I pulled the Lyman sizing die and found that if the boolit was entered to the top lube holes the taper in the die extended deep enough that the top portion wasn't sized.
I plugged the top holes and pushed the boolit to the 2nd set of lube holes and resized all that I cast last year.
Hopefully accuracy will improve and the leading in the cylinder will disappear.
Has anyone experienced similar problems?
Is it common to have to push the boolit that far into the sizing die?

Yes, pretty common. I've plugged my fair share of lube dies. Hopefully you accuracy improves for you. I have an origional Lyman 358477 that turned in some good groups for me the last time I tried it. Last group was off hand at 50 yds. 2.4" for 6, 5 in 1.4". I'm sure a fair amount of BS luck was involved in that, but it didn't prevent me from keeping that target.. :) It did shoot a .53" group at only 20 yds. right before it. Thats what prompted me to try the 50 yd. group. The load was 3.5 grains of Green Dot BTW.

Thanks for the load information. A friend has some Green Dot I could try out.

5 gr of unique will get it done. Come to think of it I use 5 gr of unique to load every single boolit I shoot out of the 38 special. 100-178 gr.

I have similar problems with the same mold. I used a 2 cavity NEI 158 swc and worked up an accurate load. The load was 4.5 gn. of WW231. The S&W M14 shot 10 rounds in 2 1/4 ", 9 into 1 5/8". Switched to Mihec and accuracy went out the window. 5 shots 13 5/8". Bullets were lubed in Star sizer (full length) at .3577. Working on new load.
