Teaching my 18 yo helper to reload. Wanted to teach him how to cast as well so ordered an RCBS 150 gr mold in 270. Fired up the pot and started casting after a good cleaning. Liked it so much I branded myself with it. :( Sigh.... Mental note, leave long sleeve shirt on no matter how hot you get over the old coleman stove. Maybe I can get the wife to let me get a production pot? Less hot working over one of those I guess?

Fortunately my helper was not there, I was just trying to get the feel of casting with a steel mold. Might have been a good lesson for him though

Exactly what I was thinking - tattoo the scar! Luckily it was not a 6-banger mold. Ouch. :holysheep

I think it would have looked much better if you had opened the mold first so it showed the bullet outlines. But as a first attempt pretty impressive.

Seriously that looks like it hurt, hope it gets better soon.

Yes, lots of good ideas here. Could try clamping it down on a love handle to get the boolit profile. :) As far as how it happened....well, I had the mold in my rt hand and the burn is on the inside of my lt wrist.......hmmm, dont really know.... just barely kissed metal to skin....the top of the "H" is missing because of my watch band. Any way a moment of inattention combined with having my sleeves pushed up got me a good burn. Could have been worse. Lesson learned.

One day later.....

I am treating it with raw honey 4x per day and keeping it wrapped.

Ouch. Burns suck. I feel your pain. Had third degree burns on my left hand about five years ago. Not from casting. Bubbled up and blistered within seconds. Hurts like a ****.

looks painful.glad it wasn't worse.you might try some silvadine cream if you can find some it will help with the pain and probably help it heal faster.

Maybe I don't want to start casting! No one told me about the pre-requisite branding. :) The good news it should heal fast.

Hey thanks. Was a critical care nurse years ago so I used a lot of silvadine on some pretty horrific patient burns. I am very skeptical of what people might call folk remedies but I also keep bees so have seen references to wound / burn treatments with honey that have been used for at least two thousand years. Anyway I have read several head to head research studies now where silvadine (the gold standard) was compared to raw honey. These were from reputable journals too. Each study concluded roughly the same results. Burn patients treated with raw honey suffered far fewer infections, had much less pain and completely healed in nearly half the time as with silvadine. They also had significantly less scarring. So far I am exceedingly impressed. No blistering. No pain and no sx of infection. YMMV.

Raw honey I have heard of and it is supposed to work wonders. When I cut off 2 of my fingers with a chainsaw, don't ask, they were taking a while to heal so against the advice of the doctor I slathered on Bag Balm, http://www.bagbalm.com/, and to the amazement of the flatlander doctor it healed right up. It also kept the skin and tendons nice and soft so with exercise and stretching I got almost the full range of motion back.

Raw honey is amazing! It has natural antibiotics in it right?
Hope it heals well and fast!

If you had of pushed it down just a bit harder and held it just a bit longer it would have at least left the mold numbers, so you would always know what mold you were using at the time.

Good Lawd I appreciate all the "sympathy" on here from the others of my gender :) LOL!!

I failed to follow the basic safety recommendations I have read time and time again. I felt like quite the M.O.R.O.N. too after I did it :( Oh, well...doubt it will be the last time I make a mistake but it will be the last time I make that one.

As far as the honey, yes, it has antibacterial properties. I have heard of folks using the bag balm but never on severed fingers...OUCH!! I continue to slather with honey and redress 3x per day and I cannot believe how good the burn looks. It just should not look this good. Going to try to post another pic at one week if I can remember.

I did that with the hex nut on a mold once, right on my the top side web of my thumb. A patient saw it here in the office, looked like a little satanic symbol, "That ain't nothing catchy, is it?"

I wish I had heard of wild honey years ago when I had 19 percent coverage of second and third degree burns thanks to an AT mine in Northern Iraq. All is well now but I have some cool scars to back up the war story. Hope yours heals soon. I know it has to cost you some sleep.
