I ordered a replica revolver Pietta Remington 1858 44 cal black powder and a lee mold 456-220-1R.
it is better that I resize the balls 454, or can I use them 456 ?
thanks for the info!!:cbpour:

Use them as cast. Conicals, as well as round balls are purposely oversize so as to shave a ring of lead to insure sealing the cylinder from chain fires

Almost right! Chain fires are from the rear unless there is a big gap at the ball or boolit. But you want a tight fit so don't size the boolits. Don't use Crisco in front of balls, it just blows away, use a thick BPCR lube. Either in front of a ball or in the grooves of a boolit. Works better to get lube in the bore. I had some old Mathews lube and it works fine.
With a Remington, stay with balls because boolit noses get cut from cylinder blast, ruins the boolit, yet we never had a chain fire. The Rem cylinder is small and the next shot is close to the gap.
I shoot ACP boolits from my Old Army with no problems. Just not enough powder room for deer hunting, RB thumps deer very well.
Some will champfer the front of the cylinder so the lead ring is not shaved off but is just sized when seated.
My friend Pete has the Rem buffalo hunter and he busts deer with it, great gun. That long barrel is something else, he gets over 1100 fps, takes 41 gr of Swiss FFFG in my Old Army to do that.
The Rem is a good choice, very accurate and strong.

I understand ..... well ...... today I had the mold lee 454 RB, I did a bit of balls, weighing from 138 to 139 grs and measure about 460'/459'.....now look the lee lee 456-220 conical-1R.

That will fit the Ruger but I don't remember the size for the Rem, It should be smaller. Don't go larger then the loading lever can stand. Looks like the .450-200-1R is the best for the gun. The nice round nose will fit the lever and won't be cut by gas as what we shot.
