would the lee 20 pound pot from midway at $59.99 be a good pot to start out with, without breaking the bank?

Yes, it would make a very good starter pot, for casting, but not smelting. You need to melt down your raw lead in a cast iron pot or something similar.

That's a good pot but try Midsouth. I think it will be cheaper.
