I have some 260 grain plain base .379" diameter bullets that I'm trying to get my Marlin 375 (.377" bore) to shoot without much success. I was thinking of trying ~30 grains or so of 4320, with the cup portion of the gas check towards the powder, then seating the bullet, slightly compressing the powder (to hold everything in place). Anyone ever tried anyhing similar to this?

They will work OK however in my .38/303 I use a heavy card wad (.065) over a full case of W748 and this works devastatingly well.

I'd be a little concerned about having it "floating around" in there... I suppose it's possible to get one left behind in the bore if it were turned during the shot, allowing everything to blow past? This is all purely speculation on my part.

What are you sizing the boolit at, and what velocity are you looking for? I would think you should be able to get good groups at 1400-1500 fps, at least, with no check, if it's sized right...perhaps even more.

That will wok very nicely.
I made a SW 500 rat load using the same idea.
powder+ inverted 475 check + #4 shot + .501-260gr RN= worked pretty good at 1200 fps using Blue Dot.

so, judging from the other posts, my speculation was way out in left field...
Am I correct in assuming there is no danger of it turning during the shot, or will the pressure keep it pasted against the base of the boolit till it leaves the bore?
I guess it could act somewhat like a hollow base boolit...

I know guys used to make snake loads for the 45 by inverting a gas check over the top of the shot in the case, and putting a slight roll crimp to hold it in place.. I just wasn't sure if it would "follow" the boolit all the way down without incident, being behind the projectile, instead of over it.

I used inverted gas checks on a 200 gr boolit out of my .444T pushed hard. I would get two holes touching and a flier, two holes touching and a flier.
