I have a lyman 457 400 grain mold for a 45-70. It says it is supposed to cast 457 it actually casts 454 and I have to hammer the hing pin to get the boolit out!
I beagled it and got it to 457. Can a mold be double beagled?
I love the style of this boolit I just need to get it to .4585-.459.
What are my options. I thought my lead mix might be bunkus. So I tried the same mix in my lyman 44 mag mold and it thru .431.
I am at a loss...
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Send it back, You didn't buy a .454 mold.

Lapping should make them release easier but it might take awhile to add .003" to the cavity. Depends on how you do it.
I've done a couple but only needed to open up about half as much as yours. Check your melt/mold temp first.

How did you "beagle" the mold? If you spun a boolit with lapping compound on it then you can do it again but I would be prone to send it back.

Should I cool the melt or make it hotter.
The hotter I ran the mold the better the bullets came out.

I had a mold like that and I didnt want to get rid of it so I cast a boolit in each cavity and then drilled a small hole into the center of it. After it cooled I put a screw into each one and then heat treated them as hard as I could (had to wait a few weeks for them harden) Then took some old valve lapping compound and lapped each cavity until they dropped at .460 with my alloy. Takes a while but it does work, but if you can get the same from the manufacture in a bigger size.. you might want to just send it back for a proper one.

I haven't seen the actual mold number posted for the OP's mold, lots could be going on here so let's ask a few questions:

1 new or used mold

2 Lyman number please

3 post a Picture? Know that might not be possible but if you can it will help.

4 do you have an actually guess on alloy's used, usually when going to a higher tin content alloy the boolits get bigger not smaller and you need to have more tin than Antimony in the alloy.

It was a new in box mold off flea bay.

The mold # is 2640643

I can try and post a pic of it later.

My melt is all coww with an 2 ounces of tin added.

Sorry for not fillin in the blanks
Thanks in advance
