I am getting ready to load up some cast .223 Rem cartridges using gas checked "Bator" 55 grain bullets from my mold. The bullets are lubed with liquid alox. Using my copy of Lyman #49, I have found a starting load of 10 grains of IMR 4227 using a 55 grain cast lead bullet. My problem is they don't have a listing for my specific bullet so I am unsure of what my oal should be. I have loaded a dummy that is .030" off the lands and fits in my magazine at an overall length of 2.10". This allows me to crimp over the front of the driving band closest to the gas check, which keeps the check from being below the neck. Does this sound like a reasonable COAL? I don't want to seat the bullet too deep and cause pressures to be too high. Thanks in advance!
