A friend of mine gave me 140- 222Rem reloads. I don't have a Triple deuce so I figured I would pull the rounds and get the brass, primer, powder and bullet. I could always use the components for my 223 Ruger American bolt rifle. According to the labels on the boxes they were loaded by some unknown individual in 1976.

After trying to inertia bullet pull about 30, I realized that the 50 grain bullet didn't have enough inertia to pull without destroying the brass. I punched the primers out and saved them to use in my substitute 22LR project as shown here.

I loaded up 30 of my punched small rifle primers with 2 grains of BE and had 100% ignition.

I thought that interesting. FYI

Thanks for sharing your experience. Careful with the BE. I'm sure you could 20x charge that case lol

I've re-used decapped live primers lots of times, not just small rifle, but all sizes. Never had a miss-fire. I don't like wasting things.

I've done it too. I was also present when a friend had one go off. Don't know why, and I've not seen it since. Wear safety glasses!

There is a small chance that you can wind up with a slightly loose fit. You can feel it when you seat it. I do not recall a miss fire or an AD.

I've done it for years, easily 30 years of loading. I started doing it when I didn't know any better, and continued after I was told it wouldn't work when my experience was just the opposite.

How did you take the bullets off?? Collet bullet puller??
When de-capping live primers, go slow. Never had an issue re-using previously seated primers.

An easy way to pull the occasional smallish lot of rifle bullets is to use a shell holder in a single stage press with no die and a set of wire cutters. Run the round up until the projectile reaches through to hole in the press, grab it with the side cutters and lower the ram.

Dump the powder, repeat until finished.

Brass doesn't get destroyed, and it is a lot quitter than using an inertia puller.

It would work with the shorter handgun rounds if you have an extended shell holder.

The inertia pullers have to be used on cement to work right. I have never had one that I could not get apart if you beat it on cement. And it has to bounce also. If it hits just once, it does not come apart. Have to hit hard and let it bounce.

The inertia pullers have to be used on cement to work right.

They work very well on end-grain wood, either hardwood or hard yellow pine. I keep a 4x4x10 inch block around just for that purpose. They will not work well on the side grain.

I was using the RCBS Inertia bullet puller with the correct shell holder. The bullets would come out eventually, but the case rim is deformed. The 50 grain bullet just didn't have enough stuff to turn on the inertia. I never had that happen on any other rounds.
