When did Marlin start using Micro-groove rifiling in the model 336 in 35 Remington?I found one at my local gun shop with a 24" barrel and a Ballard barrel. It has a Lyman peep. The serial # was I think a four digit number that started with 22 something. The stock is cracked it two places but the bore looks good.I think it will make a good cast bullet hunting rifle.

The 35 Remington chambering was introduced in the 336 in 1950 (with Ballard rifling). The change to Microgroove rifling took place in 1956, so your 336A was made between those two dates.

Marlin rifles built from 1946 through 1968 had a letter prefix to the serial number. For example a rifle built in 1950 had a "G" prefix to the serial number. If your rifle does not have a letter prefix it was built after 1968. Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture may be determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100. Example : SN 2512345 would be made in 1975 ( 100 - 25 = 75 ) A serial number starting in 22 would be 100 - 22 = 78 ( 1978 )
