I know I'm probably beating a dead horse but I need help deciding what boolit mold I need for a 94 Winchester, Post 1964. I figure (if I remember right) it was made around 1969. Cheap hardwood stock and you cant blue the reciever. Just an old junker I got as a kid. I cleaned out a guys barn and found it in a bucket of kerosene. He had taken it apart and couldnt get it back together and I bought it for $5. lol. True story. It needed a part (been so long I cant remember what) I got a blow up from an old gunshop and put it back together and the smith gave me whatever it was I needed. (I'm old and you can forget things)

Havent shot that old rifle in years but put lots of meat on the table with it in my early years. Never shot cast in it. I am thinking about a 150 - 170 grain boolit. I have lots of 748 powder I need to burn up but am open to other powders as well. Whatever shoots good in it. I may use this rilfe for deer and hogs. I may have to put a peep sight on it, cause my eyes arent what they used to be.

Any suggestions???

748 is right on for performance loads. Use circa 30-32 grains for the circa 170-150 grainers. ... felix

Oh, by all means, put a peep sight on. Midsouth sells the Williams receiver sight for about $30 or so and, without a doubt, it's worth every penny. Longer sight radius, faster peep accuracy, and it doesn't whack out the overall look of the lever action arm. I use scopes on some but regret how it apears. Just love the easy carry of a non-scoped rifle. Others can probably give you better info on loading cast.

My 64A (long barrel, short magazine, pistol grip stock) is of similar era, and it does best with 311291. Not so well with 311041.

I had amazingly good reults with 28 grains of 748 under a LaserCast 170 grain gc bullet last year.I"m gonna try 29 next week just to see what happens.
I tried either 26 or27 one time and the velocity dvieations were terrible. The 28 grains loads were +- 5. :)

Try a Lyman 311041 over 20 grs. of IMR 4198 - good load in my 94.

RCBS 150gr FP w/check in front of 10.5 Unique does quite well for me. However a 30wcf cast shud be put behind the ear or between the eyes.

I've used Lyman #311291 that casts at .311 with WW. They weigh in at around 168 grains and I size them to .309. Powder is 3031 and I started at 25 grains and gone as high as 30 grains. I settled on 27 grains as both of my guns are old timers and there is no need to push them. Recoil was ok and grouping was 3-4 inches at 100 yds with a 94 rifle off the bench. With my 94 carbine it was more like 4-6 inches. Most likely a few things could be tinkered with to improve results with both guns, but its just fun to shoot them leisurely and enjoy them as such.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll have to order a mold next week. I'll let you know how I come out.

Thanks again,

I have nothing but good luck with 311291 in various 30-30s. For full snort factory level loads I also use 3031 up to 29 grains. For lower velocities loads I use either 2400 or 4759 in the 15 to 17 grain range.

I used to shoot the RCBS 30-180-FP over the max. charge of WW 748 in the RCBS book. I don't have the book now so you'll have to look it up. The load shot 1 ragged hole at 50 and I took 2 deer with it. I sized the boolits to .309 and used Hornady checks. It shot right on POA with the iron sights ( the first rifle I ever had that did). CB.

311041 over 18 gr IMR 4198 for 1590fps.

this is the starting load. You can push them up to around 1900 fps with the same powder but the groups open up some as I increase the vel. in my rifles.
Have fun!

Accuracy load for either 311291 or 311041 for me is 28 gr H4895. Velocity is 1850 fps from the M94 Carbine. I use 31 gr over the 311041 for right at 2040 fps for a hunting load.

I got two deer with a 30-30 this year using the RCBS equivalent of a 180 grain flat point, (I doctored up a round nose Lee bullet with a flat nose punch and the bullet weighed about 190 grains) and 25 grains of Re7. Velocity was clocked at about 1850 out of my 24 inch Marlin CB. I use chilled birdshot and tmeper the bullets in the oven and then resoften the nose with a propane torch putting the bases in water while doing so. Good expansion and a base hardness about that of #2 alloy or better. Got one deer at about 150 yards and was very impressed with the performance.

I am having good luck with a cast bullet in the 180 grain range and 17 grains of 2400.

Felix gave me the best load for the .30-30 to work around & it wound up being 30.5 grains H-335 and the 311041. Also, the same boolit using 32 grains of Win 748 worked well for me. I think those 2 powders are close to each other but may vary on the burn rates a bit. The H335 I have seems a little faster than the Win 748. For plinking, (cheap) 8 grains of Unique and the Lee soupcan is a great load.
