Prayers seem to help a bit here and there. I feel like I need to ask for some for myself.

I'm diabetic and I've just taken the meds and never really tried to keep it under control too much, just let the meds do their stuff.

About two weeks ago, I had labs done and everything was ok, except for glucose and cholesterol.

It was a kind of wakeup call. Sugar was over 280, I don't recall what the cholesterol was, but it was extremely high.

No worries with that. I changed the family menu drastically. And I mean drastically. No more junk food, only foods with sugar in the house are fruits(and bread, I can't find a sugar free bread, did find one with 1<gram per slice though). No more diet sodas. Just a major change.

For the first time in years, I can check my sugar in the am and it's under 200. It's been fluctuating from 120-175, still working on getting that figured out. So I'm getting that under control.

3 days ago I used a nasal spray called flonase. I didn't think anything about it, but my vision blurred a little bit that evening. I used the flonase again that night. I used it again the next day, one squirt per nostril and my vision blurred in and out all day. Yesterday, I couldn't see without my glasses(my vision in my left eye is/was 20/10 and my right eye is 20/70, this was only effecting my left eye).

I got in the chatroom last night and the guys in there told me I needed to see an ophthalmologist asap.

I called my doctor this morning and talked to him, and he instructed me to go to the e.r. because it could be a serious side effect to the flonase.

I also set up an appointment today with an ophthalmologist.

The e.r. doctor couldn't tell me anything, other than my eye appeared ok.

I went to the ophthalmologist and had the comprehensive diabetes test done(that I didn't know I was supposed to be getting every year).

On my left eye I have a busted blood vessel that is directly in my center of vision. He said there is some swelling around it that is causing the blurring and gave me some super eye drops that should help it.

I'm supposed to use those 3x per day for the next 10 days and go back and see him. He said if the drops don't fix it then I have to see a retinal specialist.

I'm really hoping the drops work, I'm not sure what the next step would be with the specialist.

Prayers sent. I beat diabetes by losing 100 pounds. Remember fruits can have as many carbohydrates as pasta or sugar, you need to control the carbs. And if you eat double fibre bread (>6 gr fibre perslice) you don't have to count those carbs...the fibre washes them out of your bloodstream. Good luck

I'm still learning as much as I can about what is ok to eat and what's not. In two weeks of the new norm, I've gone from 239 to 226 as of today, and saving a lot of cash by not eating fast food.

13 lbs in a couple of weeks is terrific. Congratulations.

If the blood vessel doesn't heal, a specialist will use a laser to cauterize it. If the blood vessel is in your vision path, they may have to go in with a very small tool and clean it out. How big a deal depends on too many things to worry about. So don't. That's an issue for your medical team. *You* can't do anything about it. Your mental state is also an issue in diabetes. A therapist or anti-depressant might be helpful. If your physician suggests either, please give them the consideration they deserve.

If you tolerate statins well, your cholesterol can drop in just a few months. Take it from me, read the data sheet that comes with them. I ended up in the ER on a Monday after my physician doubled up my statin dose the Friday before. Chest pain happens to be one of the possible side effects. Neither I nor the physician had read that little bit of info until Tuesday. Oops.

At some point you may not be able to lower cholesterol further. Nor change the ratio of good to bad. (which are relative terms, by the way) I'm off statins because I've reached the point where further reduction would result in no "good" cholesterol.
Keep up the good work.

Will mention you in my prayers, Possom. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 8 years ago. I "sort of" watch what I eat and try to exercise. The exercise is hard to stay with consistently. Especially this winter. At almost 72 YO, it is tempting to rear back in the recliner and take it easy. I recommend that you try some kind of exercise. It does more for your blood glucose than you might realize.

I don't really "exercise", but I do walk about a half mile to a mile every day going to classes. I also have a bike that I ride with the wife and kids when the weather is nice.

I need to get on a routine and stick to it.

I got diagnosed with diabetes late November last year and am now at normal fasting glucose and insulin levels. I studied the problem and worked out a diet and exercise plan. Modern day fruit is full of sugar and selectively farmed for sweetness ,eat no more than 1 piece of fruit per day and spread it over the day. Give up all grains and high carb foods including rice ,potato corn etc especially wheat and wheat products. Eat nothing with added sugars or corn syrups. Eat unprocessed meats including the fats, plenty of eggs and cheeses, plenty of greens but watch out for some that are high in carbs. Give up sugar and replace it with a product called stevia. Have your coffee white or with cream but no milk. Get your vit d checked because you will be low. Vit d aids glucose uptake and helps with insulin intolerance. If you do this for about 11 days your liver will shed a lot of weight and you should go into Ketosis which means your body will start to use your stored energy(fat) and your glucose levels wont max out . Exercise is what uses up your glucose so a moderate exercise regime will help also. Im afraid its the modern diet that is the problem with a worldwide increase in diabetes. I now after 4 months allow myself one day a week to indulge (in moderation) some breads and potatoes. I have forever renounced soda drinks commercial ice cream and sugar added products especially in cans .

Good morning
Will also pray for you. We must remember this body God gave us is to be used wisely.
I started having headaches about a year ago. Just kept getting worse slowly over the weeks. So about 2 months ago the thought popped into my head "If eating sugar is bad for some maybe I am in that some'. Stopped all sugar intake and in two days headaches gone.

Prayers sent. Fiber does NOT clean anything out of the bloodstream, it never gets there. It does help clean out the digestive process well, though. Exercise is the other key. You can reduce your blood sugar by 20-30 points just by energetic exercise for 20-30 minutes.

Your fasting blood sugar should be under 125, anything over that and you are damaging your body. Post paridinal (2 hrs after eating) should be under 180. Again, over that and you are doing damage to your body. When you are over that in a fasting blood sugar ask yourself how you ate yesterday and how you should change it (fewer carbs over more time). If your post paridinal is over 180 you ate too many carbs that meal. You should limit yourself to 45 grams carbs per meal (men, 35 for women) and half that between meals. Read labels, know serving size and how many grams of carbs there are in a serving.

Between that eating discipline and exercise you should be losing weight. This will reduce insulin resistance (caused by organ fat, seen as belly fat), lower bad cholesterol and increase the good, and improve your triglyceride levels.

I have been type II diabetic for four years now and the above works for me.

Possum813- Get to a retina specialist ASAP. If you have a blood vessel that is ruptured it needs to be treated ASAP, not three weeks from now. There are no drops that can repair ruptured or inflamed blood vessels. The blurred vision is leaked blood in the retina of your eye not allowing light/vision to get to the optical nerve.. The retina specialist,if possible, will do laser surgery which is not a big thing. They will inject you with dye and photograph your eyes. This gives the retina specialist a picture of what he is dealing with. There is no pain involved. There is no incision. The only thing that is uncomfortable is they put a lens under your eyelid. The laser is just a bright light. The quicker you stop the bleeding the better the chances are that the the leaked blood will clear up and your vision will return to normal. THE LONGER YOU WAIT THE CHANCES OF LOSING THE EYE INCREASES. I AM SURPRISED THAT AN EYE DOCTOR WOULD ALLOW OUT OF HIS OFFICE WITHOUT MAKING IT MANDATORY TO SEE A RETINA SPECIALIST. IF THE BLOOD VESSEL DAMAGE IS NEAR THE OPTICAL NERVE THEY CAN NOT DO THE SURGERY.
Prayers sent and please heed my advice. Your eye/eyesight is nothing to play around with.

The bottle of drops isn't a standard eye drop solution. It's called Nevanac and is about $150 for 1.5ml.

He did a comprehensive exam and seemed content with what he found and gave me the drops and I go back on 5/2 for a follow up.

I didn't understand many of the terms, but basically he said it was a blood vessel that busted directly in my center of vision and there is swelling around it. The way that I understand it, the Nevanac is an inflammatory drop that absorbs to the back of the eye and should reduce the swelling.

Since I've been using the drops(since yesterday) it appears to have cleared up a little, the fuzzy spot is still there but it seems like it's smaller. It may just be my imagination, but it certainly appears to be smaller than it was yesterday.

I also am diabetic and had regular eye exams. Between yearly visits I had leakage of a blood vessel near the center of my eye. I had no symptoms and was not aware of any problem. No affects to my vision at all. The retinaologist thought I was going to lose the eye. The leakage was 1 mm from the center of the retina. The surgery saved the eye and the doctor was amazed that the retina cleared up. Proceed with caution.

I saw the retinal specialist this morning, the eye drops didn't work and the ophthalmologist referred me to him after the second visit.

My eyes are in good shape, the issue is some kind of leakage and swelling right in the center of vision. He ran some tests and showed me a high resolution digital image of my eye(pretty neat).

After that was all done, he explained that a shot would fix it. After listening, we discussed a needle going into my eye, then we discussed a needle going into my eye, and then we discussed a needle going into my eye...

All said an done, he put some numbing drops into my eye, and 10 minutes later I was being driven home by the wife with orders to not go swimming or pick at my eye the rest of the day and I can go back to normal tomorrow.

Got home and the wife made me stay inside and relax all day, I felt completely useless today. I wound up falling asleep in my chair for a few hours.

Now, the eye is starting to work better, I'm actually looking at the screen of the laptop and typing without the help of my glasses(for my other eye), and I can actually see individual letters again.

Just a little bit of discomfort, not really pain, feels kind of like a bruise when I close my eye tight. Not bad though. The only bad part was after the shot. For about 2-3 hours I had a 'shadow' that the doctor said was an air bubble. About the most annoying thing I've ever had to deal with because it would move all over and was just annoying.

I go back in a month for a follow up and to make sure the shot worked. He was quite confident that the shot would fix this problem and it's a relatively common issue that he deals with on a daily basis. So hopefully everything turns out as well as the doctor is expecting.
